That is so daunting!! I felt that when I took Sophia to school. But she absolutely loves going which is a blessing. This is so beautifully created and photographed Deborah :-))
Deborah Parkin replied
I think that is it … I have just started taking Fleur to school and thankfully she is ok. I had so many issues with school which started from the age of 4 – maybe this is why it something I am photographing. This is taken in an old school yard. Thanks so much Sylvia for your comment :)

UnEasy
Beautifully done. For me I get a feeling of emotional ambiguity, perhaps derived from the inescapable dimension of hope and optimism I ascribe to children, at odds with the noir impact of the bars through which she gazes. Thus a tension.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you UnEasy for thoughtful comment – so pleased you got this from the image :)

I used to take paintings to a gallery director. She was so passionate about art. Sometimes she was scathing in her criticism, sometimes she went into raptures over the minutest detail.As I look at separation I can hear her voice as if she were viewing it for her gallery, delightfully pawing over the pitted iron, and stone work, your light and shadow. I Reckon she’d love it so much she’d probably go on for ages. And I love it too, one of your very human pieces Deb, that so brilliantly captures our emotion. No doubt : )
Deborah Parkin replied
aw Graham – you really are going to make me big headed and impossible to live with (although apparently i am anyway lol) – thanks as always.

Oh boy. This really brings back memories to my school years. Going to school was like being locked up in a prison camp. The loneliness and terror. The lack of safety. You created a very masterful artwork here.

Reflective – outside looking in, and inside looking out. This one really pushes my memories buttons – I like it, but feel uncomfortable with it. A beautifully taken image full of feeling.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much Graeme for your honest comment – it is great to read although sad.
marshall calve...
Deborah how wonderful, I’v been looking at this for a while and it sometimes it makes me feel very odd as if this beautiful girl has been locked away and is all alone and that is a little scary !
I then flipped the coin over and then I see a happy little girl who can’t wait to get into school to meet her fiends and have a good time. brilliant work always makes you think a little. Love it
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much marshall – I always enjoy reading your comments – they are so thoughtful – I really appreciate them :)

in simple terms, you always manage to make a black and white image look so different from all the others. ;
) xox) xoxprimary school was very tough for me. i did not mind the classroom, it was the playground that treated me badly, so to speak. i remember my younger sister, leaving the school grounds and walking all the way back home, which was at least a 3 km walk. the teachers went crazy and thought they had a lost child on their hands. hehe ;
another beautifully emotive work deborah.
Deborah Parkin replied
I used to do that too – run away from school – walk the streets and parks for hours – I was only about 7 as well – what a nightmare. I think I found primary the hardest – I suppose we are so little and so much is expected from us. Thanks again aglaia for your support and encouragement of my work – means a lot:) xx

I have a nephew that is going through middle school just like this. Sadly his grades are being effected, along with his eating habits.
The school yard can be a rough place. “Fitting in” has always been an issue, I am sure. Today I am sure some of the children are as cruel as ever. We just need listen to how children talk and look to see their influences in this world.
Disrespect, sarcasim, and belittling are accepted at a level like I have not seen since I was in grade school.
At a young age we do not understand just how unimportant it is to have to fit in. Well for some of us. There are others that never leave the feeling of needing to fit in behind them.
As much as the children need to be encouraged to cope with such things, I think more teachers need to be more assertive.
I dont have children but I was a child. I know the feeling all to well depicted in this image. I was the chubby, non-athletic kid that was picked last. I was the not so smart kid that was laughed at when I answered a question wrong. I was the kid that did not swear and use bad language, so I was a target for bullies.
I pulled through. My hope is the children out there feeling as I once did pull through as well.
Great post.
