playtime
I remember one of the loneliest times for me at school was when it was playtime. Looking around to see who and if you could play with someone. I think though it made me learn to like my own company .. I am still very much happy to be in my own world.

Deborah Parkin replied
It certainly can Rosemary – thanks so much for your comment :)
Stuart Chapman
Go on and pull at the heartstrings with your childhood story too Deb. :(
Beauty of an image though, the vigentting works better than ever here and the child’s feet at the start of the game completes the shot perfectly.
For me, the saddest part was always being picked last for football
Deborah Parkin replied
Sorry Stuart – didn’t want to make you cry lol!! I suppose I am just trying to explain my work – are you picked for the football team now by the way :)

Glenn-Patrick ...
Excellent work and full of meaning.I sometimes like the alone part of life but I’m learning that even someone who thought they could be a hermit sometimes gets lonely.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much Glenn-Patrick for you really thoughtful comment :) I think we all get lonely (even those who like our own company) but I think I would always rather be on my own than where I feel I am making up the numbers – I think I have just become wiser and more selective about who I let into my life :)

Very evocative – know the feelings of being alone, yet surrounded by folk all too well – you do learn to enjoy your own company – but sadly, you also tend to keep that solitude even when you dont want it as you get older…..

I wish I had read the description before I first commented on this image. Now your journal entry of the same name has brought me back here, and this time I have I read it, and now I can say that it’s not just a nice shot as I originally commented, but although I very meaningful image – obviously to you, and to me, and I’m sure many others.
I have too many memories of being in school, by myself at playtime because, well, I had no friends basically. Unfortunately I would suffer a similar experience in college.
I’m glad you wrote your journal entry because otherwise I would never have come back to this image, despite it being a great one, and would have never read the description and seen how meaningful an image it really is.
Oh, and by the way, congratulations on the homepage :)
Deborah Parkin replied
wow Matt – thank you so much for coming back and being so honest – although I am always pleased when an image means something I am also sorry that it does – especially this one. I am sorry that you found this at college too – that’s cruel. If it makes you feel any better I found this in later life but I also found people that are wonderful and beautiful. I am 40 next year and I am only just accepting that you may feel different from those around you but there are still many like us. I hope you are finding peace and happiness with yourself and others – take care xx

Deborah Parkin replied
Wouldn’t it have been good if we had all been at the same school – no more lonely children :) Thanks so much for your comment :)
marcusjohn
Such a powerful image Deb. I was fortunate enough not to experience such loneliness at school on a regular basis however do remember some bully moments that came my way. Not really remembering how hard it is growing up, your image really reminds and resonates the lasting effects things experienced in childhood have on us. Having 2 young ones, one thing I fear is them experiencing these types of challenges and loneliness through out their school years.. You are a wonderful story teller..
Deborah Parkin replied
I think you are right – childhood comes back to us more acutely when we are parents – a constant worry but we also know it is just part of growing up. Thanks so much for thoughtful comment Marcus – lovely to hear from you :)
Louise Cooke
Deb I missed this! I can see why so many have responded…such a powerfully emotive image. Love the way you’ve cropped the girl’s head…like she’s invisible to the viewer, invisible to her school-yard peers. It’s sad and dark and lonely. Congrats on such a brave image :)))
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Louise – you always give such wonderfully thoughtful comments and I always look forward to reading them – thanks so much! :)
bela
very good..
Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you bela – appreciate your comment :)
billyboy
Deborah, it never ceases to amaze me how your work tugs on so many heartstrings. You have a gift of communicating emotion that is unique and I love that your style is so recognisable and unique to you. I would have spotted this as yours from miles away.
I think that maybe it’s because you leave her anonymous that so many can relate… almost makes me look deeper to imagine her face. Your clever framing and formatting makes the anonymity (sp?) work to perfection.
Typical you… blowing us all away with such a simple black & white image that goes straight to the heart.
Awesome work!
xo
Deborah Parkin replied
Now this image is complete – I have a wonderful comment from you my dear friend :) Thank you so much – I think you know how much it means to me. I hope you get Carousel soon xx

I can’t believe how good this is. I don’t mean to wax cheesy, but seriously,
um…I’m in awe of this. I now teach tutorials (at another site) regarding lighting and exposure, but uh…I feel stupid looking at this. Like a big hoax…heheh.
This is the ^%$#.......................!
