Hi Deborah, this image tugs at the memory as a young lad I hated school (how I wish I could have changed that) and I can see myself in this not wanting to go or getting wrong for running away, I hope this is all wrong. the image is so strong beautifully lit and composed
Deborah Parkin replied
You are spot on here Marshall but thankfully the child was me and not Fleur – I have projected my memory onto the child in the picture. I also hated school – had such an issue with it – ran away too. This was taken a day before she started but we were talking about school – she was very apprehensive but thankfully loved her first day. As always thank you for your thoughtful comment :)
RajeevKashyap

Stirs things up for me does this Deb…you know my feelings about school… As well as the wonderful lighting and shadow you’ve captured that emotion, albeit projected, perfectly.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Terry – so great to hear from you – so pleased you got something from this. :)
Michael Oubridge
Fabulous Deb, love the shadow lines cast by the blinds. I only enjoyed school for the football and cricket lol.

Thanks Michael – lovely to hear from you – maybe if I had played football and cricket I may have liked it a bit better lol :)

Adrian Jeffs
Expertly composed and shot Deb… Funny how I watch my two sons pull the same pose every morning, and how I go to work with the same deflated attitude. It never ends!
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much Adrian – I know could you imagine life without it :)
Louise Cooke
this has such a quiet intensity about it Deb…beautifully shot…it seems like there’s lovely sunshine outside, but she’s stuck in the darkness of her fear, sad and vulnerable. Stop doing pics that break my heart!!
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Louise – always lovely to get your comments – will try and do something more cheerful soon lol!!! :)

The chair, the light, your narrative takes me to times I can relate to, so as a photographer you’re a powerful artist too, to me. I love that your photography is such fine art.
Viewing your work, I’m often surprised, but always overjoyed. Your command of light in this one is well , your just bragging now. lol : )
Deborah Parkin replied
lol Graham – you have to be careful as I may become rather bigheaded in the Parkin house with comments like this :) Hope you are having a good weekend.

Deborah, You have captured a beautiful mood in this image; sadness and quiet internal fear of your child. The tones are simple lovely which work very well with the composition of your daughter being just off centre and the chair filling the rear of the frame.
Very thoughtful image, super work!

Deborah Parkin replied

Such a gorgeous study of light and tone. You really are a master and you portray both so well. Aside for that, the pose and emotion in this are also really well executed. I’m sorry that I’ve missed you rwork as you have been uploading, Deb, but it is always worth the while catching up!
