  • Birgitta

    Birgitta

    This is photography. :)
I’ve learned only recently that photography actually means
“to paint with light”. (I love that) You’ve done that here so well.
I wanna be like you when I grow up!

    ;)

  • Deborah Parkin replied

LOL Birgitta – you are too funny – thank you so much – I am sitting here with a big smile – it means a lot to me :)

  • Birgitta

    Birgitta

(Side note- brilliant how you included the a child & a door
here as well. Both very symbolic..and I love that she’s walking
away, about to enter through the door; creatively I could even
interpret this as her abandoning her childhood to enter into
young adulthood…no time for the “kiddy things” any more, etc. etc.)
    Symbolically, that’s what I see. :)

  • Deborah Parkin replied

I love your take on this Birgitta … you are spot on really. It’s about children abandoning childhood not because they want too but because they ‘have too’ .. they way the puppet looks is the way the child feels.

This series blows me away Deborah, stunningly poignant and just so touching, absolutely beatiful image, your lighting and dof are more than sublime…........

  • Deborah Parkin replied

Thanks Tracey – such a great compliment and really appreciated – so pleased to have found each others work here on rb.

  • GlennC

    GlennC

Deborah, It’s interesting how the child in the background makes this less sinister in feel that the first. It tells a story but for me it is much more a child discarding a play mate rather than anything else?
I love the feeling your getting with your Hasselbland, it is making me really want to scratch that itch i have for getting one!

  • Deborah Parkin replied

Thanks Glenn – really appreciate your comment. You should definitely go for the Hasselblad – they are beautiful .. I really want to get a Toyo and get into Large format ..will need to save for a bit though :)

i absolutely love the 6×6 format and that Hasse is a gem. this is outstanding work. the stories you tell through your images come across as timeless vignettes. just wondering what film you like to shoot? cheers!

  • Deborah Parkin replied

Thanks so much J. K York (I must know your name) I love this comment – such a nice thing to say. I love the Hasselblad too .. the film I used was ilford FP4 (and I use HP5)- want to try tri-x too. Do you recommend anything?

The hasse – Lord of Cameras. Even today. Lovely image. It tells quite a story – many stories. Brilliant.

  • Deborah Parkin replied

Thanks lightsmith – it is a very old camera by the way – I not that rich lol!! But it is superb :)

  • J.K. York

    J.K. York

I’d stick with the Ilford Deborah. I, too, use HP5. for finer grain i shoot Pan F50. i’ve also had good results from Delta 100 and their super high speed 3200 film, but overall I’d say that FP4 is unrivaled in its class. cheers, James Keith.

  • Deborah Parkin replied

Thank you James Keith :) I like it to be honest and have the developing as second nature now – would be very interested to use 3200 .. I am not keen on flash so this would be interesting – thanks again :)

  • Kofoed

This is really what photography is all about. To paint with light. You have added a lot of symbolism, and now you have a work of art.
Splendid work, Deborah. If it wasn’t for the fact, that you a considerably younger than I am, I’d say the same as Birgitta: I wanna be like you when I grow up…..

  • Deborah Parkin replied

haha that is so funny Kofoed and such a wonderful compliment – I am very flattered – thank you so much for your lovely comment – I really appreciate it :)
