Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you Marshall – always love reading your comments – you are always so supportive. This was shot on a medium format camera 6×6 – hence the square format – it’s drawn from childhood memories – waiting for my dad to visit.

Hi Deborah, this is so brilliant. Love the tonal range and how the vignetting, which is drawing me right into the scene of the little girl! Having read the reply you have given to above, makes me think of a title, “When is daddy coming?”

Thanks Sylvia – you always say the loveliest things – like the title too. Hope you are well.

Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you Mick – such a nice thing to say – makes me very happy :)
Basia McAuley
Beautiful and sad,, love the vignetting which highlights the girl,, well done.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Basia – I wasn’t sure whether to add the vignette or not – the original is ‘straight’ from the neg (for uni – they don’t like ‘gimmicks lol’) but it didn’t seem to fit with the rest of my rb work.
Adrian Jeffs
Love the tones and comp of this image…. must be serious if teddy has been discarded… would be funny to reshoot this when she is a sulking teenager….

Graham Dean
The grain on the floor boards, the shadows from the drapes. Even panda feels Fluer’s drama. How brilliant to capture these details then give them such an important role in the emotion. I love too that I’ve been inspired by your art to include my kids in the process of making my art. It’s great Deb.
Deborah Parkin replied
Graham, you always say the loveliest things and I will always appreciate your support and encouragement – sorry I haven’t been around to comment lately but promise to look into your inspirational work soon. Hope all is good with you and your family.

Fantastic work Deb… this piece is full of emotion and I love the composition of this. The attention to detail of the framing with the curtains is brilliant but most of all I love your choice of setting and how the room appears to envelope the little girl… all enhanced by the vignetting.
Great to see some of your college work!

Thanks Paul – you always say the nicest things – I just love getting your comments. Are you back in Saudi yet? If so did you have a good time back in UK?

Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Vonne – lovely to see you.
Stuart Chapman
The beauty of your images Deb is that you can never tell if their staged or just natural. I mean this appears set up to a degree but also looks like such a natural and true event (with trademark vigentting (I know that’s probably spelt wrong!)) focusing the eye on the image for maximum impact. Hope University’s been benicial for you
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Stuart – as ever you leave the most wonderful comments – really nice to see you :) I suppose you could say this is semi-staged – lighting set up … furniture pushed out the way but child not participating as I hoped – but results better than wished for. Anyway, hope you are well and exams going ok.
Mel Brackstone
Beautiful work, Deb….sorry I missed this in my activities! Love the beautiful soft background as a foil to your little girl….so atmospheric.

Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you Nadine – I really appreciate your comment. I really enjoyed my course thanks – really challenging and quite a love/hate relationship but it did really push me out of my comfort zone.
John Robb
Beautifully and hauntingly emotive. Her isolation is reinforced by the combination of posture, position and the distance from her remaining friend. Wonderfully composed and shot to create a heart wrenching image.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks John for such a lovely, thoughtful comment – I am so pleased that you got this much from it. Hope you are well :)
billyboy
Massive emotion in this Deborah. I too am sorry I missed it…
I love the way you use the floorboards to draw me in and the slight vignetting just puts the right emphasis on the girl and her bear who is helpless at being able to console her as she ponders on deep childhood thoughts. You have an amazing way of making us feel these emotions and bringing out the simple reality that we’ve all been there at some level. Beautifully done, such a worthy submission.
It’s also the first time I’ve ever noticed an angled bay window radiator. Thought you might have done it in Photoshop… so I Googled bay wondow radiators. Sho-nuff, they had one exactly like the one in your pic. I’m so stoopid.
xo
Deborah Parkin replied
billyboy, I always am thrilled to get your comments – they always blow me away – you are too kind (but I like it :)) I am so pleased that you feel the emotion that I was hoping to portray – emotional response or engagement is always top priority for me when creating an image – thanks again :)

Tenee Attoh
This is lovely yet very sad, I have notice a number of your photos represent isolation from a child’s perspective. Well achieved.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you Tenee for your very insightful comment – I am really pleased that you have understood what I am trying to convey in my childhood images – thank you!!

Awesome. Your web site rocks, as well.

Thank you and thank you for the link – just noticed (sorry) – but thanks again :)
Sharon Mau
This is very beautiful and so sweet. How do you create the wonderful oval vignette effect? It adds such a fascinating dream quality to your work. It looks sensational in monochrome.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks again Sharon – really appreciate your kind words :) The vignette is created by burning – for this scanned image i did it photoshop but I also do it in the darkroom too.
Sharon Mau
Really, I have tried burning with clouds and shadows now and then, how do you manage it so uniformly?
Deborah Parkin replied
mmm never really thought about it but thinking about it I use a large brush, low opacity and start gently and build up and out – in darkroom i don’t think it would be so uniform.
Lorena Maria
Absolutely beautiful b&w….very emotional too!
jiba
Brilliant!!
Can Berkol
your art is adorable!
Cee Neuner
Definitely tells a story!!!! Great capture!!!
Rob Toombs
I do a lot of work for the NSPCC and this image has instantly hit me… The vulnerablitiy of this image is amazing… YOu have as always captured such amazing emotion… A powerful shot Deborah…
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks again Rob … I started these images at uni .. I based them upon childhood memories – they are very personal. They are not just about how i felt (the images aren’t actual events but fleeting feelings) but I have also tried to show the vulnerability of children and how childhood shapes us as adults (yet as adults we can forget this and repeat a pattern) – hope that makes sense. Thanks again :)
Rob Toombs
It makes perfect sense Deborah and this is portrayed in your artwork… Simply beautiful and touching xx
Kristi Bryant
Deborah, your images are so powerful, you have such a talent for conveying the sadness of a child. Your shadows and tones are just stunning- congratulations.
