Contemplation

Deborah Parkin

Contemplation

This was taken the days before Abe went back to school (around the same time as the Thinker) – it was a time when a lot was on his mind. This is not posed, it is natural. I added a diffusor in pp to emphasise the fragility of childhood and how as parents we try and protect them and guide them for the outside world and yet sometimes they have to stand alone with the inner and outer turmoil of life. I suppose this is just one aspect of life – whether child or adult.

great capture. the soft focus and the tone are nicely done. This is splitting hairs, but I would try darkening or losing the outline of the jaw and the ear in the shadow. It’s a little distracting.

There is so much feeling in this portrait! Your aproach to it makes the viewer focus on the emotion rather than the child. The only reason this works, is because the lighting and the tonal range is superb!

I am very facinated with everything that has to do with illusionism and magic. Illusionists often use darkness, black boxes, black velvet, dark stages, as an environment to make miracles happen. Suddenly there is a dove or a flower, rising out of the darkness. When I looked at this picture I had to think about that. Because you also use this dark velvet to make miracles, of light, appear. Oh, this sure is contemplation. And the vagueness also emphesizes that his mind has faded away to his inner world. He is a lucky boy to have a mother that sees him.
