On a beach, a plastic bottle in hand, an aluminium factory behind and the next generation – just made me think a bit, plus the sheer attitude of my daughter :)

The attitude definately does it for me! Is this a sign of things to come?
Fantastic work Deb, I love the great contrasts in your B+W processing and it really shows up well here.. brilliant tones in Fleurs hair and the detail in the bottle is excellent.. I have to say that the shapes of the factory make for a great backdrop!

hello Deborah, another great mono image a great pose from your daughter I don’t know about the alcan smelter behind her,
PS did you find out about medium format yet, my experience were with mamiya 330, bronica and a rolleiflex 2.8 planer they all had good and bad features, but the best was the rollei amazing lens and light to carry the down side is only one lens, best of luck with your choice

LOL…I thought the bottle was going to have Validvar written on it LOL! But thats just me being cynical! The smelting of Bauxite to make aluminium is a very polluting process…...you should let her stick to the plastic bottle and re-use it! Love the sass projected by Fleur! She must be learning from somewhere?

OK…You better stop this now…you are not allowed to get this talented….This is just so amazing…you have no idea….the breath in this image is the air that one breathes…it has so much POP to it Deb…this may be the best you have done yet….there si something about this image that just makes you take notice…..her whole demanor here is what sells this image….and of course your abilty to capture her in this perfect moment…..This is a real winner Deb….You are just getting better and better all the time….Now that I think of it…this is your best work

Such a bold statement Deb. Very powerful image and not your usual beach shot for sure!

The details are sharp bold and brassy and the usual b/w treatment really gives it that extra punch.

  • Stuart Chapman

    Stuart Chapman, 2 months ago

And now it’s my turn to come back for a second look and comment. The statement made from this is just as strong as the image. All the ingredients are spot on and the whole image is greater than the sum of its parts.

Deborah, What I love about this is the way she totally dominates… like you were shooting a scene of total banality, and this brash young lady thrusts herself in front of your lens and takes a deep swig as if to say “Look out buster, one day I’m gonna swig vodka like this and there’s nothin you can do about it!”... Yikes, i think I’ve just condemned the next generation…!

Awesome job of processing this. Your BW work always speaks massive volumes.

I could have told this was your work without looking at the by line. It is so distinctive: the visual style and the ethos are unmistakably yours, what makes your work so compelling.
Man has been polluting the Earth since his arrival, the rising population and the inexorable march of ‘progress’ has just made it more difficult to dispose of the evidence. It’s reached the point when we can no longer ignore it. If we don’t clear up our act it’s your child’s generation that will have to cope with the consequences.

this piece tells a story – Leah’s expression makes the image for me – her jaw jutting out almost in defiance, going for that last drop… the industrial background adds a nice counterpoint – a simply ugly, soulless presence. The structures look like they’ll last forever, but her strength & spirit maybe a little longer than that – After all, she is the one in the foreground dominating the picture. I’m ricocheting around here, but that’s what it means for me, lol. Hope you’re well, Deb :)

Another strong image Deb. I love what you’re doing with this whole series and your kids are just PERFECT. So much beauty in such desolate environments. The contrast is so strong it makes me stop and look which can only be a good thing as a viewer : ) “Grafitti child” arrived BTW and it was hard to part with. It’s even more stunning when it’s printed. Great work : ) x
