My beautiful girl
Someone (not from RB) remarked that they didn’t like the way I photographed my children in such dark tones and they felt children should be photographed in colour – they felt it captured childhood better – maybe they have a point – but I photograph this way to try and capture either a timelessness or the spirit of the moment – anyway, I haven’t listen and i have made an earlier image even darker – just did a bit of dodging and burning.

What would they know Deb!
These are some of the best portraits I have seen. They show your love for your children in your own special way. Don’t change a thing!
Deborah Parkin, about 1 year ago
thanks Andrew that means a lot
Kitsmumma, about 1 year ago
That someone was soooooooo WRONG!!! I think the black & white adds such a special feel and mood, it brings out the beautiful skin tone, the sparkle in the eye and the beautiful curves of the face. This shot just would not look the same in colour. I love your portraits, Deb. Do not change your style. It’s perfect.
rebecca zachariah, about 1 year ago
Deborah, I really like your work. I am glad you have not listened to it. Each to their own interpretation. But I love it. It is timeless and I am sure your children will always treasure this as their heirlooms (is this the right word?)
Loredana Crupi, about 1 year ago
Ditto !! What are you are capturing with your b/w portraits is the very essence of their natural beauty and innocence. As Andrew says, don’t change a thing Deborah ! :-)
Deborah Parkin, about 1 year ago
thank you all so much – have just come in the room and seen your comment and had to laugh – it’s like having a protective family around me and it’s great – thanks so much for your comments and support.
Angela Stewart, about 1 year ago
Photography is art, however you look at it. Like other forms of art, what appeals to some, won’t appeal to others. To say your style is wrong is just ridiculous…if YOU like it, and others like it (and lots of us do!!), then don’t take much notice of negative comments like that. Just feel sorry for people who don’t know good photography when they see it!
I love this particular image of Fleur…well done Deb :-)
Jeff Burns, about 1 year ago
I think you do amazing work. Lighting is fabulous in this. No matter what you do there is always going to be someone who doesn’t like what you do. There is always one! Keep doing what you are doing. Its incredible

I like dark n moody photos. this is a dark n moody photo n i like it. nice catch lights
Whether is is suitable for children? It’s whatever you like.
i always like to print me photos dark n burn in the edges.
I assume that this is a digital photo converted to black and white? The digital work is a bit too strong and has posterise areas of the skin. I am only pointing it out because I really like this image.
Deborah Parkin, about 1 year ago
thanks again everyone and thank you Daijiro for taking the time to comment – I take your point – the original was shot in b & w digitally you can see it on the last page of my portfolio – I’m not too worried about the posterization at this stage as I haven’t had the time I would like to work on it but when I do i will certainly take into account what you had to say. Thanks again though.

For me what is appealing about your work (and this one in particular) is the strong contrasts of the black and white – and what rot it doesn’t work for children’s portraits! clearly they are wrong!!!
this would be one of my favorites – love it!

wow, look at all the comments!! I looked at the original of this portrait and I think this is much more effective, the tones are super, very nice!

Hi Deborah, As you can tell from my folio I love black and white and these are some of the best portraits I’ve seen. My wife has even said that she wants me to buy a new digital slr and get rid of my nikon fe so that I can take some of our children.
The mystery and timelessness of black and white can’t be beaten and some of the greatest portraits have been taken in black and white. Keep up the great work, it’s just fabulous…....
camneville, about 1 year ago
Your very welcome. I am sure we will enjoy patting each other on the back quite often, I am originally from the UK and so my big influence was Don McCullen, try looking for his books, especially ‘Sleeping with Ghosts’, haunting, disturbing but brilliant. I have never actually shown any of my work before. Someone once said that I had some nice images but they were mainly ‘fillers’, He worked for a photo magazine and didn’t like my work. I had a car accident at chistmas and was nearly killed, my good friend VANSK put me onto red bubble, check out her work too. Thank you for what you said, it makes a big difference, I haven’t used a camera in around 7 years…....Cam xx

kookylane, about 1 year ago
Well, Personally, I actually like the contrast of light and dark in it, no matter what other people says. There is nothings dark or sinister in it, rather because of the dark tones the light really shines on their faces, it gives a really intimate and magical quality to it, anyway, the expression is gentle and soft. I LOve it the way it is.
Gary Trounson, about 1 year ago
Just great
marieancolie, about 1 year ago

Just beautiful!! Congrats on sticking to your style I photograph a lot of weddings and everyone always has an opinion on how it should be done but in the end you have to stick to your way of doing things or your work would loose the distinctive touch you bring to it as an individual

Like the effect. Looks like the child is watching tv and the light from the screen is reflecting onto the face. Good work.

Beautiful portrait. Captures the nature of the child nicely. Shows the nature of the child beautiful with the use of BnW and low depth of field, focussing on the child’s face. Technically and artistically perfect. Great lighting and composition.

K.D. Hemi, 12 months ago
The most amazing child portrait i think ive seen here on redbubble…. the eyes in this image are totally moving… well captured Deborah!! as for the comment on children being shot in colour…this image to me shows otherwise… the innocence and tenderness associated with children can sometimes be lost in colour… something that i think b&w tends to show equally as well (if not better)......

Martie Venter, 10 months ago
Well, whoever expressed that stupid and narrow-minded criticism of your work, Deborah – I couldn’t disagree more, your child portraits are all exquisitely beautiful and truly capture the essence of your emotions and the emotions of your beautiful children, as only b&w can – without the distraction of color! I love the selective focus and the light here, as well as the pensive and serene expression you captured – magnificent work!

People say that stainless steel is cold; but add it with the warmth of wood and it
is also warm and charming! Your “beautiful girl” would be cold in just black;
but add her innocent fact with her soulful eyes; and Whew! What a Shot!

Beautiful…amazing. I love shots like these
Danthesnapper, 5 months ago
Hi Deborah,
Im a new kid on the block, but something that was told to me at a photography group, was that the difference between a “picture”and a “photograph” was that there is an emotionla tie between the viewr and the subject. Your shot really captures the wonder and innocence in the eyes of your child.Personally I think this is brilliant.
I would love to know how I could do pieces half as good as this. Excellent work,no question.
