His nickname was “Jimmy” which he didn’t like really. He’s born on May 20th 1908 and was one of the best actors of Hollywood He played in about 80 movies and was the first movie star to enter the service for World War II, joining a year before Pearl Harbor was bombed. He was initially refused entry into the Air Force because he weighed 5 pounds less than the required 148 pounds, but he talked the recruitment officer into ignoring the test. He eventually became a Colonel(active duty) & then Brigadier General in the United States Air Force Reserve., and earned the Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Croix de Guerre and 7 battle stars. In 1959, he served in the Air Force Reserve, before retiring as a brigadier general.
He won his first Oscar in 1941 for " The Philadelphia Story", he sent it to his father in Indiana, Pennsylvania, who set it in his hardware shop. The trophy remained there for 25 years. In 1985 he received an Honorary Oscar, the audience gave him a ten-minute standing ovation.
He died on July 2nd 1997 at age 89.

Brilliant artwork, better than a photo!!
How long does it take you to paint such a detailed painting of this size???
    Cheers Neil

  • Hi Neil, thank you for your wonderful compliment!
i could say like some painters say, it took me about 51 years ;-) but that is bit silly. I worked on it for about three to four weeks, but not all the time of course. Hard to say how many hours in total, but it was a lot.

Awesome painting, your attention to detail is always a credit to you and makes you a fantastic artist. Every little hair on his beard is perfect and his eyes show the miracle of your work……perfect in every detail. I love it! It would look great in a hall of fame for Jamey boy :o) I love how you have shown the scale of this too………two very handsome lads :o) xxxx

  • Thank you sweetie…..blush blush… ;-) too much credit for me.
Thank you for all the good words and tips you gave me, that really helps.

James was my favourite from his era, and you have captured the gritty but caring roles he played. The wrinkles and the dry lips indicate the bright sun and hot weather he worked in (and was made up for in his acting career), and you’ve captured his steely stare to a “T”. I see the size of the original in the accompanying photograph, that was a lot of work Arie!

Fantastic image and painting. Great work.

  • It was a lot of work but I enjoyed doing it every step of the way; that’s what they say, it’s not about the goal, it’s the journey that is important!
Thank you very much Harry for this wonderful comment!

I’m quite taken with the detail you offered up in this one Arie. Excellent work my friend, I think someone already said this, but it is far more effective than a photo. I’m really impressed.

  • You know I love doing details Jim. And this was one big opportunity for me, I enjoyed it very much seeing Jimmy’s face arising from a white canvas. It truly amazes me as well when that happens! Thank you Jim for your always kind words and support!
