Thanks Lara, this is one of southern Africa’s favourite birds. They are easily found at cafes and restaurants in the national parks.

    What a cool looking bird!

  • AARDVARK replied

Thanks Kimberly, these birds are characters (they will steal food from your plate) and are firm favourites across southern Africa.

Thanks again X. This and my earlier bird photos were taken in South Africa. Like Aus and South America Southern Africa is a birder’s paradise.

  • AARDVARK replied

Thanks Trevor. This bird is common across most of southern Africa. The photo was taken at an outdoor restaurant in the Kruger National Park. Such venues are good for bird photography since the food attracts the birds. Even if you do not feed they they will search for scraps and a brave few even “steal” from your plate.

Where in the Kruger did you take this GREAT picture? This is incredibly close!

  • AARDVARK replied

Hello Taschja, many thanks for looking. The photo was taken at the restaurant in Lower Sabie. If you look at my earliest pages I have many photos of SA birds.

    Centurion. Pretoria, right?

  • Taschja Hattingh

    Taschja Hattingh

Yes, Centurion – are you going to see the flowers in Namakwaland this year?

  • AARDVARK replied

Hello Taschja, unfortunately I’ll not get to SA this year.

Wonderful job, I tried hard to capture one of these while up in the Kruger with no success, well done!!

  • AARDVARK replied

Thanks Macky. This one was taken at the restauant at Lower Sabie, the little guy sat on the post for several minutes so I manage several good photos. Another good spot is the cafe between the Malelane Gate and Skukuza by the junction of the H2-2 & H3, I forget the name but it is some thing like Afsaal, possibly .
