Oh $#|7!
No this is not Teddie Kennedy at Chappaquiddick!
Location: York’s River Ouse.
The following is from www.thepress.co.uk:
A TEENAGER has relived his miraculous escape after his car plunged into a freezing York river – only days after he passed his driving test.
Michael Barker was forced to scramble out of the Vauxhall Corsa he had borrowed off his dad, after it span out of control in Terry Avenue in the city centre, smashed through wooden barriers, flipped over after hitting a tree and landed upside down in the River Ouse.
The 18-year-old, from nearby Vine Street, managed to clamber out of the vehicle through a window as it filled with water before swimming round to the car’s passenger side to drag his friend, Martin Bone, to safety.
The drama unfolded at about 10pm on Sunday, with recovery teams pulling the R-registration Corsa – owned by Michael’s father Tim – from the river yesterday morning.
“I’d taken two of my friends home and as I tried to make a turn in Terry Avenue, the car went out of control on the ice,” said the apprentice mechanic, who passed his test a week-and-a-half ago.
“It kept going, slid off the road and although I tried to brake, nothing happened. The car hit a tree which must have flipped it over and rolled into the water – it was as if everything was happening in slow-motion. I knew what was going to happen and I could see myself going into the river, but I just froze and I couldn’t do anything about it.
“I was so scared – I thought that was it and I wasn’t going to get out but, as the car filled up with water, I managed to wind the window down and swim out through it. I came up for breath and, realising Martin was still inside, felt my way around to the other side of the car, found the door handle and pulled him out.
“We must have been in the water for five to ten minutes, and when we got up the riverbank I was absolutely freezing – I couldn’t feel my hands and my fingertips and feet were numb.
“I was keeping to the speed limit and thought I would be alright, but I know I’ve been very lucky to escape. When I saw the car being pulled out of the river, it played on my mind what might have happened if we hadn’t been able to get out.”
Michael and Martin, also 18, were taken to a nearby house by a passer-by where they were checked over by paramedics and treated for exposure to the cold. Despite the after-effects of their ordeal in the freezing water, both escaped uninjured.
Dad proud of son’s bravery
PROUD and relieved – those were the words Michael Barker’s father chose to describe his feelings after his son managed to fish both himself and his friend out of the River Ouse.
Tim Barker’s car was reduced to a soggy, dented wreck after a skid on frozen roads caused it to career into about three feet of freezing water – leading to its two teenage occupants having to make a dramatic swim for safety.
But the state of the Vauxhall Corsa was the last thing on his mind as he said: “I’m just relieved they both got out.
“Michael said he panicked to start with but then calmed down, and if he hadn’t done that, it could have been a lot worse, so I’m proud of what he did. “I’m not worried at all about what’s happened to the car – you could do that sort of damage just bumping into a wall.
Bishopthorpe Road resident Roger Ford was out walking his greyhound Flash when he saw the Corsa upside down in the Ouse and raised the alarm.
“I saw red lights in the river and then realised a car had gone through the barriers into the water, but the people in it were already out,” he said. “They’ve been very, very lucky, because the temperatures were freezing and if the river had been flooded, anything could have happened.”
