Tinted Rose with Textured Background by

515 views as of March 2, 2013

I recently attended a macro workshop focused on the use of flash in macro photography. I shot this pink rose indoors with some window light and two Nikon SB-R200 speedlights mounted on my Nikon 105mm f/2.8 micro lens. The background was a photo of a sky that I liked when I took the shot but not when I looked at it up close in Lightroom. That’s when I decided to colorize the image add the textures.

I used Nik Color Efex Pro 4 Colorize and Darken/Lighten Center, and the textures are Purple Grunge and Smokhouse from French Kiss Textures.

Just as delicate and pretty as can be, and such a lovely color blend! I’m trying to picture your rig with two speedlights – on a bracket of some kind, I would guess. Kudos for working to increase your skills.

  • Thank you so much for your kind comments and encouragement, Celeste! The speedlights are part of the Nikon R1 system – they attach to an adapter ring on the lens as, pictured here. I am still learning how to use these lights effectively and I want to try them outdoors as well. The only problem is the rig gets heavy fast, and I’m having some shoulder issues, so I’ll probably have to wait before I play with them again!

Very nice touch Anita. I’ve never been keen on flash in macro work however you have certainly proven me wrong. Maybe I need to attend a macro workshop????

  • Thank you so much for your kind words, Robyn. I wasn’t big on flash in macro work before I took this workshop, but now I see many possibilities, especially in low-light situations where I can’t use a tripod. It takes some practice (as least for me!) to get the right balance between flash and ambient light, but I’m hoping to try some more flash shots this summer.
