I love baby leaves, and I usually have to wait until early April to enjoy them, but the recent warm weather here in Massachusetts brought them out about two weeks early. These were the first leaves I photographed in my yard this spring!

Photographed with the Nikon 300S and Nikon 24-120mm zoom lens at 120mm, plus Canon 500D close-up filter.

They look like they’re bursting with life, excited to get the season started, so I gave them a bold treatment:

Layers of Topaz Simplify Watercolor and Topaz Detail Creative Detail Accent, a low-opacity Fractalius layer, and Nik Color Efex Pro 4 Darken/Lighten Center. Then I added the textures to the sky – Absinthe Vert and Evening Veil from Flypaper Textures.

My goodness, what an artistic statement you built from these precious new spring leaves! Very lovely work, Anita! And you are one of very few people I’ve seen use Fractalius with art and subtlety.

  • What a wonderful comment – thank you so much, Celeste. I did have a lot of fun trying to find the right look for these charming baby leaves.
