I took this photo at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge, MA, USA, one of my favorite places to photograph. It’s about 2-1/2 hours from where I live, so I get there only once or twice a year. I took a lot of shots of these lovely primroses, and this was my favorite. I thought the soft focus would work well with a textural treatment, so I added layers of French Kiss Textures Charmante and Avril, as well as Kim Klassen’s Retreat.

These flowers take well to the dreamy, textured treatment. Depending on the detail in the underlying image, I would be tempted to try layer masks to bring back some detail at the center of the flowers. (I hope you don’t mind my making such a suggestion.)

  • Thank you for making that suggestion, Celeste. I added a layer mask and I think the image looks much better. Of course I would be happier if I had better focus, especially on the right-hand flower, but there’s not much I can do about that now!

I agree it looks better with that touch of sharpness. And I think it’s perfectly OK for the flower on the right to remain soft now that the middle flower has a part to draw the eye.

  • Thank you for taking the time to comment again, Celeste. That’s a good point about the softness of the flower on the right. I’m not always sure when softness does or doesn’t work!
