Happy New Year! by Anita Pollak

Happy New Year to all my wonderful RedBubble friends! Thank you so much for your encouragement and inspiration, and I hope 2014 is a happy, healthy, and creative year for all of you!

This is an abstract I made for a class a couple of years ago. Here’s how it’s done: Add olive oil to a water-filled glass pie plate and stir with a fork. Pie plate rested on a metal bowl (about 8 inches high) containing balloon-patterned wrapping paper. I used the Kenko 20mm and 36mm tubes on the lens.

Nikon D300S with Nikon 105mm micro lens and two Kenko tubes

Various filters used, including Topaz Adjust and Star Effects and several Nik Color Efex Pro 4 effects.

Festive and fun! I appreciate your explaining what you did to achieve this bubbly abstract. :)

  • Thank you so much for your kind comments and the fave, Celeste! It’s always fun to go back to old images and use them in new ways. This was a challenging technique for me and I would love to try it again, but it’s messy so I’ll wait until I can do it out on the deck – not anytime soon!

Wow, what a cool experiment! I’m trying to picture this in my mind. Happy New Year to You!

  • Thanks for your kind comments and wishes and the fave, Viv, and Happy New Year to you too!

I learned this technique from a class with Bryan Petersen, and here’s a YouTube video he made to demonstrate it. It’s a lot of fun, but it does take some practice (at least it did for me) and it is messy, so I think it’s better to do it outdoors. Of course neither of us can do that until spring!

I hope you and your family have a wonderful New Year, and do stay warm!
