This is a Sweetheart Dahlia taken at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in late September. I’ve never seen this variety before and I was just enchanted by her beauty, and the turned-up petal that seems to say “Come hither.” I will certainly try to get some of these lovely dahlias for our garden next year.

Nikon D700 with Nikon 105mm macro lens.

I did some basic adjustments and finished with Studio 3 Collection’s Botanique from French Kiss Textures.

This dahlia has such a pure and simple beauty about it, very daisy-like in form, but that one curled petal makes it so special! Beautifully photographed and presented, Anita!

  • Thank you so much for your lovely comments, Celeste! I actually thought it was a daisy (no tag at the garden) until I looked through my dahlia book and there it was! That curled petal was what caught my eye – it really does make this flower special!

The name is so appropriate! When I saw the thumbnail, I thought, “What a sweet little face!”. It certainly is a very feminine flower. The curled petal will be the last one in the process of uncurling to expose the centre for the bees. It makes it look as if the flower is saying “Hello!”, which, for all we know, it might be!!!

  • Thank you so much for your delightful and perceptive comment and the fave, Kathryn! Maybe it really is saying “Hello!”
