Gold Hill Cobbles
Gold Hill is a famous street in Shaftesbury in Dorset, England. It is a steep cobbled street featured on the cover of countless books about Dorset, chocolate boxes, postcards, calendars and in television commercials.

Gold Hill featured in the 1973 “Boy on Bike” tv ads for Hovis bread. The advert was voted Britain’s favourite advertisement of all time. It was directed by Ridley Scott, and includes the distinctive music of Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9.

As it is such a well known and much photographed street, I tried to capture something a little different.

Gold Hill Cobbles belongs to the following groups:

FANTASTIC IMAGE. I’ve walked up here…a few years ago….and I love that advert. Wonderful treatment :-)

  • A90Six replied

Thanks Lyn! It’s a struggle isn’t it. I stopped at every bench along the way pretending to take more shots.

    LOL…..I was shattered too….lol

  • A90Six replied

I so know how you felt. I took this shot when I fell over with exhaustion at the top of the hill!
                                            :) Tony.

What I reckon happened was, you had a little too much Gold Hill ale, caught your 5 inch heels in the cobbles, and bam, there you were on the ground and there was the shot! Great shot too!!!

  • A90Six replied

You got it in one Tess! I fell and grabbed the camera straight away and started snapping to hide my embarrassment. It would have worked too if my knees weren’t bleeding and my hat hadn’t rolled halfway back down the hill. The hiccoughs rather gave the game away as well!
                                            :) Tony.

A great take Tony and I always thoughy struggling up here was a bit like the climb up the main (the only) street in Clovelly. The low angle was inspired and there weren’t too many people around to wonder why you were lying face down in the middle of their road! A terrific piece of work mate. Peter

  • A90Six replied

Thanks Peter! The advent of flippable lcd screens on cameras has made taking such shots so much easier.
                                            :) Tony.

I see you also own a camera with a flippy screen – useful isn’t it!!??? LOVE the perspective on this – great shot mate. xx

  • A90Six replied

Thanks Rosalie! Oh yes, wouldn’t be without the flippy-screen these days. They are so good for low shots, high shots and surreptitious candid shots. You can get some great angles without breaking your neck.
                                            :) Tony.

Lovely shot, now for some reason I always assumed that Hovis advert was somewhere further North!

  • A90Six replied

Thanks Celia! The accent used for the ad (pretending to be the old man thinking back to when he was a boy, pushing the Hovis bike up the hill) was Yorkshire. That’s probably why.
                                            :) Tony.

BEAUTIFUL CAPTURE…....IT PUTS A WHOLE NEW MEANING TO RUNNING OUT TO THE SHOPS FOR A LOAF OF BREAD. THINK OF THOSE POOR WORKMEN WHO BUILT THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE….WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU LEFT THE HAMMER DOWN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ROAD…..........

  • A90Six replied

Thanks Diane! Imagine the struggle getting the bricks up there!
                                            :) Tony.

    Wow, this is great. I have a friend who moved from the USA to Dorset and tells me she has a house on a hill, with a steep back yard. I’m going to email her a link to your picture, perhaps one of those houses is hers? Anyway, great picture it also reminds me of that town in the David Lean film “Ryan’s Daughter” but I think that was filmed in Ireland. :}

  • A90Six replied

Thanks Mary! Dorset is full of hills, but you never know! Ryan’s Daughter was filmed in Dingle in County Kerry Ireland. I will probably make a trip to the town when I go to Kerry in a couple of weeks time. Watch this space!
                                            :) Tony.
