Abbotsbury, Down the Hill
A look at the houses down the hill in Abbotsbury, Dorset, England. In the 11th century King Canute rewarded the services of Orca, his steward, with land in Abbotsbury, Portesham and Hilton. It’s believed there was already a religious community in Abbotsbury, and Orca and his wealthy wife Tola built an Abbey here. The Abbey dominated life in Abbotsbury for 500 years, but was destroyed in the dissolution. The barn survived and is the largest thatched building in the world.
Until the dissolution, Abbotsbury would have been one of the most important villages in the county, and the settlement is laid out around a wide market area. After the decline of its monastery, Abbotsbury became the quiet village it is today.
In 1664, during the English Civil War, Roundheads and Cavaliers clashed at Abbotsbury. Cavaliers besieged the Roundheads in the church tower of St. Nicholas’ church, which still bears the scars of musket fire.
During the Second World War, the coastal front was fortified and defended as a part of British anti-invasion preparations of World War II. Later, the Fleet was used as a machine gun training range, and Bouncing bombs were tested there, for the Dambuster sortie (Operation Chastise). More info

Really gorgeous and unique work, Tony. Dorset must be one of the prettiest counties. Agnes xx

It is a beautiful place, but then everwhere has it’s own beauty if only we have the eyes to see it – apart form Willesden in Northwest London and a particularly drab area close to Mount Entoto in Addis Ababa.

Like I said…you need to put a calendar together of these shots. All outstanding – the treatment is both gorgeous and so condusive to the charm and history of these great little places you’ve shown us! Cheers, s.
A90Six replied
Thanks Sandra! I don’t think I have enough yet for a calendar, maybe some place mats!

You proved my point! Seven street scenes (at a push), a house, a derelict house interior, a bridge and a waterway does not a theme make! And I’m still short a cover image! I’ll be better prepared next year!

Once again, love the quiet village idea, especially typing this in small cubicle inside large corporation downtown in large city, maybe I’ll get lucky!
A90Six replied
Thanks syd! I hope that’s not one of those small cubicles with a roll of soft paper hanging on the wall!

It’s your style that is the key here Tony, not an anal specific theme – all these images are of charming structures with your signature style of treatment on each one – all gorgeous and still within a themed syle perameter. Loosen those trousers a bit T! LOL….Cheers, S.

Yikes! Noo, my cube has a regular seat, comfy, and the sounds are different…

Beautiful picture, it is a lovely place! My cousin lives near Weymouth and the last time I was home, I remember going to a great pub in Abbotsbury.
A90Six replied
Thanks Nan! It was mt first visit to Abbotsbury. We were only passing through town heading for the swannery, but pulled over so I could get a few shots. The swannery was, unfortunately, closed, so we just had a quick run around in the shingle on Chesil Beach.

A truly lovely image; nice capture! Hard to believe there’s still houses with thatched roofs there!
A90Six replied
Thank you! There are thousands upon thousands of thatched houses in small villages all around the country. Many people retain them to keep the look, many are unable to change them even if they wanted to. The buildings may be protected and local laws prevent them being changed. A thatch will last thirty years – a good thatch, fifty years – and they look so cute!
:) Tony.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!! Absolutely fantastic image. I went to Abbotsbury last year to the swannery. This is superb work Tony.
A90Six replied
Thanks Lyn! That’s where we were heading too, but it was closed. As usual, I never miss an opportunity to jump out of the car and start snapping, much to the chagrin of the locals and other road users!
:) Tony.
Marjorie Wallace
