A Real Tasty Geezer

This was me sometime back in late 78. I had left my old job in a timber yard where I was earning £45 a week for a new job working on a building site on Oxford Street as a labourer for £75 a week. It was mega-bucks at the time.
The only problem with the job was that my glorious hair (not back-combed – that’s just how it looked when brushed down), which came halfway down my back when wet and in natural ringlets, would get full of bits of brick and cement and I just couldn’t get it out.
The hair or the money? The hair or the money? The hair or the money?
The money won and I had to say good bye to the hair. Before visiting the barber, I went to Harrow-on-the-Hill station to use the photo machine so I could have this shot of my crowning glory for posterity (and to look at and lament on cold winter nights).
The removal of all this insulation was a great shock! I couldn’t believe how cold the head could get. I decided to get a hat and the choice I had was between a blue bobble hat or a trilby. I went with the trilby and I still wear a version of it to this day – see profile pic.

There must be a comment I can make….............there MUST be! But I have a photo of my eldest son similarly coiffeured so I can’t say TOO much. And you have a shirtless collar too! Crikey mate, you WERE with it! Peter

It was so in back then with all the footballers, pop and rock stars all having huge curly hair. Women would stop me in the street wanting to touch it. How things change!
:) Tony.

That’s an af to be proud of!!!
I love the wear and tear to the pic too… as though it’s been in your wallet for 30 years (perhaps it was…. to periodically lament over?)
Very serious face… was it because you felt angry over being practically forced to cut perhaps?
And the hands are intriguing? Judging by the height… I would assume they’re not yours? (could be wrong)
so much character here.
A90Six replied
Thanks Pip! They’re my hands (don’t know why I did it) and the moody look was just a teenager moody look showing how cool I was (although cool wasn’t used here in the 70s unless it referred specifically to cucumbers – tasty was the word of the day).
:) Tony.
Pip Gerard
how funny – maybe tasty will make a comeback.
the hands show your creativity.
Pip
A90Six replied
Maybe it will! “Tasty” was cool, but with a hint of moody, tough and “don’t mess with the best” thrown in!

You look like King Buzzo from The Melvins !!! : o
If i didn’t have such a wierd shaped skull i would shave all my hair off in a flasH ! It just gets in the way. And like you say a hat fixes that. I’m glad i chopped off my daggy old Long hair.
A90Six replied
Shave it off! It’s cool to be different! There is a shot of your Skull in the Odd Heads group.

Oh, I never thought I’d ever see this Tony. I remember you telling me about the wild hair of your youth and I thought you were exaggerating simply to entertain me. I was in London around that time, but had I seen a fellow with hair like that I’d have remembered it for a lifetime. I love that you found this old shot and shared it here. Maybe you’ll start a trend and we’ll all find images of ourselves from our youth to share!!!! You are a brave man Charlie Brown. Hugs, 30 S.
A90Six replied
thanks Sandra! I knew I had it somewhere and had to do a lot of digging around to find it, but here it is! I wonder if there’s a 70s group with tank tops, platforms and bell-bottom trousers?

You haven’t really changed all that much Tony – you still have that worn, crumpled look. Actually, for all we know you could still have all that hair under the hat …...
A90Six replied
Thanks Tessa! Yes not much of a change I suppose, still have the sepia coloured skintones too! I was wearing the hat at the time – it was the hat that was under the hair.
:) Tony.

This is awesome Tony. Even I never saw anyone with that much hair in that era, great photo…............

Love that 70’s look and great story! How oftentimes we try to forget the old days, don’t we?

Man, what a hair-do!! Didn’t you just love the 70’s!!! I guess you also had impossibly tight jeans to go with it too?? (nice vintage treatment on the shot) =)
A90Six replied
Thanks David! Everything needed to accompany the look!

Great story, great look, my own long-locks-sheared decision came after being mistaken for a filthy-dirty Dead Head (fanatic Grateful Dead followers who stop washing or trimming or brushing or bathing period) quite unpleasant. Kept a picture, never really regretted it, now watching the exodus of the hair like the migration of the wildebeests!
A90Six replied
Mine went like the migration of the swallows. Just up and flew away one fine day!
:) Tony.

Oh Wow, now that is what we call a “fro” short for “Afro”
A90Six replied
Thanks Barnsis! Pretty fly (for a white guy)!
