Betty Mackey

Art, nature, and gardens are my main interests which are expressed through writing, photography, and digital painting. I am married, a grandmother, and I work from home.

At an earlier point I felt I had to choose between words and art, but now it is all coming together. My work in all media is about seeing and trying to understand the nature of the world. Hardships in childhood made me appreciative of the beauty and good things that have come my way. I want my artwork to express natural beauty but not exaggerate it.

I am an author of garden books and an editor. My best known book is “The Gardener’s Home Companion” published by Macmillan. I also co-wrote “Cutting Gardens” with Anne Halpin and several other popular garden books.

After writing for other publishers I became an independent publisher of specialized garden books (rock gardens, regional gardens, and herb gardens) at my small press, B. B. Mackey Books (www.mackeybooks.com). I enjoy working with the authors and shaping the books in both content and appearance. You can follow me on Twitter — I’m @bbmackey.

I also teach workshops on making troughs for the garden and give illustrated lectures on diverse subjects including container gardening, cutting gardens, general gardening, and publishing. Recently I spoke on how to publish books using print-on-demand technology.

I am an active member of the Garden Writers Association, the North American Rock Garden Society, and the League of Women Voters.

It has really been wonderful for me here at RedBubble, seeing art and making “art friends” all around the world. I guess I’m addicted.
