Gyantse (: 江孜镇) is a town located in Gyantse County, Shigatse Prefecture. It was historically considered the third largest and most prominent town in the Tibet region (after Lhasa, and Shigatse).
It is strategically located in the Nyang Chu valley on the ancient trade routes from the Chumbi Valley, Yatung and Sikkim, which meet here. The town was surrounded by a wall which extends 3 kilometers. Within its wall, lies the
ancient monastery called Perkhor Chode or Palcho monastery.
