Hi all.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on camera’s from their experience as I am doing research into getting myself a DSLR camera hopefuly soon.
I am looking fo a versitile camera. I love marco and would love developing that more. I just really don’y know where to start cos there is so many store, sites and write ups in mags for camera’s and they all say “buy this one!” so I ask you all to please help me and share your experiences with me and if you know of any good websites or anything to further my research then please let me know.

Thanks again to you all for having a read and hopefuly leaving some wisdom.
Cheers

Christian, my only advice is to stick to either Canon or Nikon as both companies have terrific “systems” with lots of lenses, flashes, etc etc to choose from.

As a Nikon man for life it makes me a little sad to say – Just buy the best Canon that you can afford – But – Don’t get the cheapo lens, at least get a midrange lens.

    • Cheap combo – 400D with 17-85mm IS
    • Moderate combo – 30D with 17-85mm IS
    • Pro combo – 5D with 24-105mm IS

Throw a canon macro, or even just a close up filter in there and you’re set. If I wasn’t still a film shooting loony I’d buy the 5D combo and I could pretty much shoot everything with that.

James what’s the reason behind your advice to buy Cannon over Nikon?

What do you guys think of the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT? I’v been having a look and it seems good but id love some advice. I just don’t have a heap ofmoney to spend soim trying to get a bargain.

Whats the vibe on 2nd hand camera’s? More trouble than they are worth or what?

I dont understand why people say that Canon is the best. Why is that ?
Unless you go up to the 1D series, the nikons are better. I much prefer the cheapie D40x expeically with the cashback offer now

They all have their pros and cons, but when it comes to Canon-quality, price and availablity of stock/items stands out among the rest (sure, Nikon’s great, but try waiting 6 months for that lens you REALLY want…) Sony are pretty good too (though the body needs to be less clunky) and more lenses are finally becoming available.

Hi Christian :-) the simple truth is … as the old saying goes “you get what you pay for”. Though in truth, these days largely due to highly refined marketing hype, it will almost always be a little less than you would expect.

You can take good photographs with a box that has a hole in it (but I don’t think they come in digital :-)

Since you are already taking some fine shots, perhaps set out your priorities (price vs performance) and see what meets your criteria. Don’t just look at the cameras (too many reviews will give you a headache), look at the pictures that people take with them.

I currently use a Fuji S9500 (9MP). A very nice versatile piece of gear. When my photographic exploits justify the expense, I will probably move up to a Canon DSLR (that is not a given, just the more likely outcome).

    Good hunting!
