Drake's circumnavigation of the globe
In 1577 Francis Drake embarked on an enterprise that would make him the second man to ever sail around the world. Commanding a small fleet of five ships he left Plymouth in November 1577 not returning until September 1580, almost three years later with one remaining ship, the Golden Hind, loaded with treasure captured from Spanish colonies in South America. On his return Queen Elizabeth I gave Drake a knighthood, mainly due to the inordinate amount of wealth that she received as her share of the venture. This was a remarkable voyage in such a small vessel and was one of the main reasons for King Phillip of Spain ultimately sending an Armada to invade England in 1588.
