Up until a few years ago my passion in life was painting, I wanted to paint until the day i died and spent six years studying at Edith Cowan University majoring in painting with a double minor in Printmaking and Textiles. My greatest success in my painting career so far was to have won the Wanneroo Art Awards ‘award for excellence’ which really made me decide that ‘yes, i am an artist’... I spent many hours working on different things and even did a bit of performance art for the Awesome International Children’s Festival in Perth and for the Film and Television Institute based in Fremantle Western Australia.
For some reason or another, finally earning my degree in Visual Art did not spur me on to paint any more, in fact i havent picked up a paintbrush and done any serious work since the day i graduated. I think that over intellectualising my work managed to kill it completely. I had to think too much and it killed my spontanaeity. I became disheartened by all of this and lost my joy… I was lost and had turned my back on my creativity.
Then everything changed! I bought a cheap little digital camera and soon found that i had a new artistic direction. I began to upload my photos onto flickr and when a bit of positive feedback started to trickle in my joy returned. I became obsessed and soon my photography was my new direction in art. When i accidently dropped my camera into the lake at yanchep i was so upset, but within minutes i realised this meant that i could buy a new, better camera! A year or so later i killed the next camera, so i got another one and another until this year i saved up and bought my best camera ever… a sony point and shoot digital. I thought things couldnt get better until my next door neighbour inexplicable gave me a top of the range sony digital a350 slr with all the accessories and lenses. Now i feel unstoppable and my obsession has led me to the conclusion that i must produce more artwork and that photography is indeed my true calling as an artist.
