Life's Lush Lips

Is my way my way because it’s what I say?
Am I righteous because I spit lines like this
Strum a guitar and seem so perfect
When I pray to God to give me a purpose
Because I’m embarrassed to be bewildered by the kick of higher authority
And to be spotted for different when I fly with the majority
I’m always one step ahead, one mile higher
I’m with the no-gooders and the never-tryers
I’ll take advantage of the hopeless and the unfortunately dumb
And challenge the beliefs of a modest some
Who don’t mind my mocking of their prior knowledge
A bitter profession not even worth the college

And I’ll tell you to tell yourself
To tell the world that you’re lying
When I tell my ego to tell my brain
To tell my conscience I’m trying
To take myself down a notch
And to rip all apart
All the hatred I’ve generated
Out of my art
My heart tells me to tell my mouth
to tell God that I’m extinguishing the flames
That my deeds cannot retard

I can see why I take one step forward then eight steps forward again
When I pour out my heart into this black pen
On this white paper soon to be smudged
With the black of my heart only for God to judge
My body continues to wither for every false truth I speak
My bones crack, eyes distort and my skin begins to leak
Every sickly oil and solution that’s polluted my existence
Easier for sickness and disease to devour my resistence
Then again I can’t say I deserve anything less than a heart attack
All the more now that I’ve got 100,000 pounds sitting on my back
A whole southern town eats away at my spine
For the sake of is, ea, id and every word I’ll decline

And I’ll tell you to tell yourself
To tell the world that you’re lying
When I tell my ego to tell my brain
To tell my conscience I’m trying
To take myself down a notch
And to rip all apart
All the hatred I’ve generated
Out of my art
My heart tells me to tell my mouth
to tell God that I’m extinguishing the flames
That my deeds cannot retard

If it’s true in my head
It’s real to me
