Remember This Time From Before

Do you remember the earth
Cradling you between the stars
Your little spirit
Jelly-like aura
moving and oozing
Between perfect space and time

Your love was already made
Your will had long locks of silver
You could open and close your eyes
And bend without falling

Each person you saw was drinking and eating
The milk and honey from the heifer and the hive
The Lord saw you but he would not speak
But he did move rhythmically to the song of your cries
Wanting you to envy his life but not to say so
Because thus is death

At the time there was no death
You were a spirit child, unborn
Moving so freely and barely breathing
Your eyes were crystals and your hands were outstretched
You sought out something wretched

The water in your belly swished around
Your forehead burned hot
Your lips quivered and your body trembled
Without clear sight of the world

Then you asked, ‘Would it bother them?
Would it bother them if I
Swam in the sea of life
The fish are all bones yet they swim
And I wish to be among them.’

Yet you never step a single foot in
The water you spoke of was nothing but
The universe spinning round and round
Shining a blue, crystalline light
Shedding such colors
And making everything magnificent

You are not apart of that
You are apart of the green grass
The moss and the brush
The amaranthus and the hydrangea
The cottonwood and the sycamore

You grow to be cut down and die
Your heart only fools you otherwise
Attaching you to milk and honey that were never yours
And the playful eyes of babies

Be gracious for such autonomy
The swing that passes from the edge of life
To the dawn of death is beautiful despite the tears of growing
And each step you take closer, you are bitter for falling off
Underneath the gap, the world opens back up
The light shines again
The dimness of molded eyes under heavy eyelids
Dissolves into the distance of unfulfilled promises and desires
Don’t mind them; they almost always die with you

Now that you’re near this time
Think hard and remember this time before
The scenes you saw that left a scent in your mind
You can bring it to your nostrils and draw in a sweet breath
As the summer wind carries you through
Despite your trepidation
If you’ll take my advice and be of the wind and not of the world
Your trip won’t be so long

Just turn away from the shining lights
They deceive most that come
And don’t be so frightened when you feel the ache of your own parturition
It’s just the footprint of your soul breaking through
You know this practice well as you’ve done it before
Surely enough you’ll remember this time too
