HIS EXCELLENCY SIR MILO BOUGHTON BUTLER,

Active: August 11, 1906 –January 22 1979

Born in Nassau he was educated at the George Washington School in Florida, later he attended the Rum Cay Public School and The Boys Central School in Nassau.

Accomplishments: Sir Milo began his Political career in 1936 when he ran against the late Sir Harry Oakes for the western district of Nassau and lost. In a bi-election the following year he was successful in winning the seat, which he held until 1947. Again representing the Western District 1956-1966, representing the Bain Town District from 1967-1973.

After his Party, The Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) ushered in Majority Rule by winning the General Election of 1967; Sir Milo was appointed Minister of Health and Welfare in 1967, becoming Minister of Minister of Labour, Agriculture and Fisheries in 1968. During a Cabinet reshuffle 1970 he was assigned the portfolio of Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and in 1972 he was appointed Minister without Portfolio, June that same year he acclaimed National Hero by Special Resolution of the House of Assembly.

August the following year was sworn in as the first Bahamian Governor-General of the Bahamas and was Knighted in the Birthday Honours that same year in which Sir Milo was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of St. Michael and St. George. He was again honoured by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in February 1975 during her visit to Nassau when he was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

January 22, 1986 He was immortalized in a life-size bronze bust modeled by Bahamian Sculptor, Randolph W. Johnson. The bust which weighs over 500-lbs was unveiled at Rawson Square and to this day remains a major tourist attraction.
