Holy Virgin Mary is for the Catholic Church and for many countries in the world our Divine Mother, particularly in Latin America, I find your picture somewhat irreverent, and please don’t take it wrongly, I just want to share with you my humble opinion.
    Lorena

  • -Lilith- replied

And I’m glad with your opinion Lorena. I am aware of what you are saying, and I have received reactions of people who feel offended by this image, when I posted it on another photo-community. And I respect and understand it. I did not make this to offend of shock, on the conterary. To me this is an image of purity and womanhood in all its forms, and that is sacred to me.

  • clickinhistory

    clickinhistory

the figure of Mary is based upon traditional mother, virgin and woman goddess figures from the beginning of time, it was just this version became the state sponsored religion for the Roman Empire and then in the changing and highly political dictates of people who sort to create their own personal determinations upon the world. Which included the removing of a woman’s own sexuality, rather the celebration that had and does occur in other religions.
Saw this on your web site and thought it might cause some to feel challenged by it, while I saw it as completing the circle of woman as a whole, not a part.

  • -Lilith- replied

Amen! And I mean it. You’ve put in words what I feel and tried to say.

There are countries in the world I could be stoned to death for this. That’s why I am even more happy and eager to express in freedom, while living in a free country. It means a lot to me, and hope for freedom of expression for every human being, even when it would offend me.

Perfect statement. I wish that I had thought of this. I am excited to read what ‘clickinhistory’ said a few comments above. I could not have said it better. Keep up the great work.

  • -Lilith- replied

Thanks Terry! Yes, Clickinhistory said the right thing, at least for me. I don’t think my English is really bad but it’s still not my first language, so it’s not always easy to express exactly what I mean in English words… I am a writer though…but that’s in Dutch. :-)

I absolutely adore this. It speaks to me at so many different levels. Beautiful… the juxzposition of the Virgin-Whore is wonderfully represented here. If I were choosing an image for a woman’s book, on topic this would be my pick for a cover… Love this.

And congratulations for all the featuring in these different groups! Love your beautiful, bold art work which let people think at least twice :)) I personally love when artists try to widen the boundary’s of the human way to think and see the world.

The pose is prayerful(unrecognized by excluding minds), the symmetry of the body architecture describing an altar, not necessarily to offer praise, but to remind us the be thankful, for both triumph and trial, and freedoms by which we learn them.

Lilith, from what I can see, you look like a lovely, talented woman, and I am sure you do not mean to offend…BUT I have to say that pains me to see Our Blessed Mother in such a private place…

and if you can not ‘feel’ my objection..than ask yourself, would you put a picture of YOUR MOTHER there..if the answer is NO, then please dont put Jesus’s mother there either…

    Thank you !
    Cathy

  • -Lilith- replied

Thank you for you comment Cathy. I appreciate it. You’re right, I don’t mean to offend, although I knew it would offend some people. But that is not the purpose of this image. It is just a different point of view, that’s all. I think I do feel what you mean. All I can say is: to me Mary is sacred too, and the private place I placed her statue is a tribute and an honour, to her, to me, and to womanhood in all its aspects. And yes, I WOULD put an image or statue of my mother there! There is nothing wrong or un-sacred with ‘that place’. On the contrary. It is sacred, wondrous and to be tributed.

there is no hard evidence that jesus or mary actually existed
if you look at the mithraic mystreries there is a link between the fable of jesus and mithras both achieved redemption thro death and the idea of the virgin birth is pure plagiarism from the vestal virgins from veata the goddess of fire
i suspect if you go back1500 to 2000 years ago
a lot of religons kept merging and metamorphising
until orthodox christainity was adopted in the west
and started supressing and destroying anything that challenged
their doctine or supremacy and it seems like some religons and people still would like to supress creativity with their form of censorship
and as for being offended its become a word for an agenda of personal manipulation
if anyone is offended by my words bubblemail me and i`m open to debate

  • -Lilith- replied

Well I am not offended by your comment in anyway! On the contrary. I like your broad view and your…how do I say this in English….your own authentic way of seeing things. But I’ll bmail you anyhow soon… :-)

  • Col Finnie

    Col Finnie

A powerful piece this one. To my eye the position of the hands around the Christian statue is a gesture of respect. Placed between the legs it generates a powerful statement that rejects the demand for separation of womens’ sexuality from their spiritual selves.

I wasn’t really sure about the photo until I looked at it in depth. The name Lilith alone should had clued me in to the meaning of the art, for it is one of the many names of/for/before Mary. Very beautiful in the pose, including your hands shaping the venus mound around Mary.

Thank you, Lilith. I cannot speak for any other woman than myself, but I must say that YOU give the gender a good name. You do not take offense, nor a defense, against negative feedback. But rather counter it with kindness and love. It is far greater a task to express ourselves in kindness than in hatered or anger. I am grateful for your response, as well as Cathy for giving her opinion.

Religion has placed such a negative emphasis on the anatomy of women, that many generates have felt ashamed to have the V. It pains me still to see young girls abusing theirs without understanding exactly what it is to be maiden, mother and crone. You give me hope!!

  • -Lilith- replied

Wow!!! You say such beautiful things Saaltera, and I really don’t know how I could have missed your comment!!! I’m really happy with it. Yes, to me there is wholeness in this all. And – being a woman – there are so many reasons to celebrate and honor femininity! Thank you so much!
