Featured in Pacific Northwest. This bird is found in forests and meadows at high elevations. I photographed this one in Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. Sometimes called grey jays, most people in Canada probably know them as Whiskey Jacks, a rather romantic name for a bird that appears to have no fear of humans, and thrives at very high elevations. I captured this beautiful bird with my Nikon D2Xs, mounted with an 80-200 mm lens at 200 mm, ISO 400, f2.8, 1/400s, hand held.
The male Red-winged Blackbird’s bright red shoulder patches and raspy song is his most important tool he uses to defend his territory. A richly voiced male who has established a high quality territory can attract several mates to his Cattail Kingdom. I took this picture in a marshy area on the shores of Fern Ridge Lake in Lane County, Oregon. / Taken on; March 26, 2009

The Oregon junco is a year round visitor to my feeder in my backyard. They nest in the trees in the area, often in the spring I see young ones being fed by their parents until they can forage for their self. This one has a dirty beak from looking for seeds in the wet dirt in my yard in Veneta, Oregon. Taken on; March 16, 2009
While on my day hike at the Fern Ridge Wildlife Area I took this picture of a Golden-Crowned Sparrow shortly before they leave their winter quarters here in Oregon to head north. At this time they acquire the bold, black ‘eyebrow” and bright golden crown of their breeding plumage and fine-tune their song. Taken on; January 30, 2009

The Red Crossbill is a stocky finch of mature coniferous forests, it is dependent on the seed cones that are its main food. Its peculiar bill allows it access to the seeds, and it will breed whenever it finds areas with an abundance of cones. It may wander widely between years to find a good cone crop. / Taken in the Deschutes National Forest near Sisters, Oregon with a Canon PowerShot SX10 IS on Aug 28, 2009

This is one of many outlooks scattered around Dutch Harbor. Reminants from World War II, these and other structures remain as a reminder of the greatest generation. I really enjoy going out and about on my time off to see these and other sites around the area.
