Mississinewa 1812 Each year my father (Tim Denny) and I take a “photography trip”. Most commonly we go late in the year for Fall colors. This year we spent a week in Indiana, taking photos at a re-enactment and covered bridges of Parke County. The Battle of the Mississinewa, also known as Mississineway, was an expedition ordered by William Henry Harrison against Miami Indian villages in response to the attacks on Fort Wayne and Fort Harrison in the Indiana Territory. The battle is significant as the first American victory in the War of 1812. The site is near the city of Marion, Indiana. Mississinewa 1812 is not a re-enactment of the battle. It is a period re-enactment that captures the lifestyles and military living in the period 1812. If you ever get a chance I totally recommend the event. Trully enjoyable. Over the next several weeks I will be posting images taken at Mississinewa 1812 along with covered bridges from Parke County, Indiana. Please View Larger and Enjoy

Taken in Santiago, capital city of Chile. Santa Lucia Park leads to the lookout point over the city with 360 degree views of the Andes Mountains. The view from the top is seen in Paradise Lost. World Forgotten shows another view of the incredible building in this park. This scene was not set up, the woman walking happened to climb the staircase as I arrived. I have no idea why she was dressed this way, (assuming she was here for a photo shoot?) but it all just fit so well. Featured in Out of the Past November 12, 2009. Best on Full Size Wandering around my cousin’s farm in Davidsonville, Maryland, I fell in love with so many images. This was taken from the inside of an old tobacco barn which we calculate to be well over a hundred years old. This image is a compilation of two shots, both my own. The barn image, RAW, taken on my Manfrotto tripod, was shot on a disappointingly gray and overcast October 29, 2009 with the Nikon D300. Shutter 1/500, aperture f/11.0, exp 0.00, iso 1600. Sky image, a hand held jpeg, was taken August 29, 2009 with the Nikon D300, shutter 1/640, aperture f/13, exp -.67, iso 400. Lens was 18-200mm vr Nikon in both cases. After the image was combined, I created an hdr in Photomatix by duplicating the jpeg to evals of +1 and -2 in Photoshop. Lots of Photoshop tweaking including addition of 2 textures. Also available without texture: /

This gent is retired from the military and now rides with B Troop, 4th U.S. Cavalry (Memorial) which commenmorates the U. S. Army’s participation in the Indian Wars. B Troop is all volunteer and is based at Fort Huachuca, AZ. Hated the background of horsetrailers on the shot of the cavalryman, so moved him about 400 yards to a much nicer scene. “A Chook named Rembrandt” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © / Sony a100 camera / Photoshop CS4 artwork I found her pecking around the old timber verandas of the Lions Den Hotel in far north Queensland and thought she deserved a portrait worthy of her name. She flew up onto a timber chair placed there for the patrons and with the corrugated iron walls of the pub as a background I thought perfect and said, “now for goodness sake don’t move!”. She was very obliging although the look in her eye told me she had better things to do. :)

This shot of a steam pressure gauge was taken in the engine room of the sternwheeler (paddle steamer) S.S. Klondike, which is now a static tourist attraction in Whitehorse, capital of Canada’s Yukon. I actually had two cameras with me, with both my lenses, but chose to use the longer of the two lenses for this shot, because depth of field was so important to the way I visualised the image. The light wasn’t great. It was murky and raining, and this shot was taken in the mid-section of the interior of the historic vessel. That’s precisely why I shot it from side-on, rather than standing directly in front of it and obscuring what little light there was. The Klondike played a crucial part in transportation and re-supply during the gold rush and was a symbol of the subsequent prosperity in the province. I can only imagine how many crew members in the course of the vessel’s operational life must have trained their eyes on this gauge, to make sure their wood-burning ship was operating within the correct parameters. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K200D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F4.5, 1/90 sec, ISO 400, focal length 170mm. Out of the Past is a group dedicated to those individuals who desire to imitate the great photographers of past eras. The History of photography is a fascinating on and there is nothing quite like the pictures of “days gone by”. Images submitted to this group are expected to be in a style reminiscent of those who created and helped photography evolve into what it is today.
The purpose of this group is not to display objects that we can see in our present day that existed in the past, but to display images as though they were taken in their respective era. It is to imitate those who initially discovered, created, and enabled the evolution of photography. Men such as William Henry Fox Talbot , and his image The Open Door, Joseph Niepce , Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre and so forth..
Please NOTE : AN IMAGE THAT REPRESENTS HISTORY DOES NOT MAKE IT ELIGIBLE FOR THIS GROUP. WE ARE LOOKING FOR IMAGES THAT IMITATE STYLES AND TECHNIQUES OF PAST ERAS.
We have had a lot of confusion on this point in the past. Please understand, something that is black and white, or sepia, does not mean it is in representative of another era. Also please understand that any image that contains RUST, does not belong in this group.
