Three Shire Heads is a point where four packhorse routes meet. There is a fabulous high-arched stone packhorse bridge beside which is Panniers Pool where the little ponies with their heavy panniers or saddlebags would have been allowed to drink. / Back in the 19th century, Three Shire Heads was a place where lawbreakers or coiners evaded capture by crossing into a neighbouring county as years ago it was only possible for police to act within their own county limits. The local settlement of Flash takes its name from the trading in counterfeit money by these coiners, the word flash being associated as dishonest or not of genuine quality i.e. flash men (thieves), flash money (counterfeit currency) or flashy (not as good as it looks.) / This was also said to be the setting for illegal prize fights and cock fighting as the perpetrators of such crimes could escape and soon disappear in this wild and rocky scenery. It is reputed that a court was held on this spot in the 14th century by order of the Black Prince, Lord of the nearby Forest of Macclesfield, relating to tenants of the counties of Derby and Stafford who were accused of trespass into the forest. / Taken with my D300 and 10-20 Sigma lens ND 0.6 filter on tripod 2 seconds at f22, then processed in Photomatix, Capture One and NX2. Ribblehead Viaduct is a railway viaduct across the valley of the River Ribble at Ribblehead, in North Yorkshire, northern England. / It is the longest and most famous viaduct on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, a railway line passing through some spectacular British scenery. Ribblehead railway station is located less than half a mile to the south of the viaduct. / Designed by the engineer John Sydney Crossley. The first stone was laid on 12 October 1870 and the last in 1874. It is 104 feet (32 m) high and spans 440 yards (402 m). It is made up of twenty-four arches. It is located at the foot of the mountain of Whernside. / The viaduct is curved, and so may be seen by passengers on the train. The train journey from Settle to Carlisle is short enough to allow the Yorkshire Dales holidaymaker to make a return day trip (steam-hauled, in the tourist season) including a few hours in the border town of Carlisle. / Two thousand Navvies building the viaduct established shanty towns on the moors, named the towns after victories of the Crimean War, sarcastically for posh districts of London, and Biblical names. There were smallpox epidemics and deaths from industrial accidents; meaning that the church graveyard at Chapel-le-Dale had to be extended. / The Settle & Carlisle line is one of three north-south main lines; along with the West Coast Main Line through Penrith and the East Coast Main Line via Newcastle. British Rail attempted to close the line in the 1980s, citing the reason that the viaduct was unsafe and would be expensive to repair. A partial solution was to single the line across the viaduct, preventing two trains from crossing simultaneously. The closure proposals generated tremendous protest and were eventually retracted. The viaduct, along with the rest of the line, was maintained and there are no longer any plans to close it. / The viaduct is Grade II* listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The aim of the group is to provide..
A SHOWCASE FOR THE BEST OF THE VISUAL ARTS IN “THE NORTH WEST” REGION.
This can include the best examples of all forms of visual art by artists working in the region. Artists submitting work from outside the region would need to demonstrate that the work has been inspired by the people, and/or culture and/or landscapes of the region.
The “North West” region is a little tricky to define but roughly corresponds to the Granada TV region and includes, the Lake District, Lancashire, Gtr. Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, the Isle of Man, parts of North Yorkshire and even North Wales. We all know we live in “the north west” even if we are not sure about its boundaries !
“The north west” is a culturally diverse region that has welcomed outsiders since before the Romans. Many migrants left Europe from our major port Liverpool.. don’t know where they ended up though. We have varied weather.. some of the finest architecture, and landscapes you will find anywhere.. we were the first to realise the potential of the industrial revolution.. we have the best sports teams anywhere and our bands started the “pop” era.. we have two of the worlds greatest cities in Manchester and Liverpool.. but I could be a little biased.
Although our region is quite small (not much more than 100 miles north to south) it has some truly varied landscapes. Rugged mountains to the north, vast open moorlands to the east, a long coastline to the west and huge almost unbroken conurbations in the south. We want the group to reflect all that is interesting, varied exciting and unique about our vibrant region “The North West”
Each artist is limited to ten works so please submit the best examples of your work.
Why are we limiting the number of works per artist ?
We hope this will mean that artists submit the very best examples of their work, thereby making the group of real interest to the viewer… and hopefully encouraging sales of these works !
We feel that by limiting each contributor to ten works we will actually make it more likely that your works will be found by visitors… because the group could become very large otherwise.
All images submitted will be moderated by the Hosts. We will decide which works to accept based on the above criteria and in our opinion select those works we consider to be the best examples. Please don’t be offended if a work is not accepted it is only our opinion, please keep trying !
Lets make this a proper gradely group.. tha no’s !
