  • Dawn Of The Dead... by Kevin Kroeker

The ruins of the Redcliff Radar Station. This is the outside of the former command center. All the buildings are now crumbling and in ruin. The station has been abandoned since 1961. Radar operators in the AC&W Squadron tracked the movements of aircraft sighted and passed speed, height and direction information to a Direction Centre (DC) and fighter interceptor squadrons. Fighter aircraft could be airborne in minutes after an alarm was given, and they closed in on unidentified planes by means of direction provided by the radar operators. Another of the Red Cliff functions was furnishing navigational aid to friendly aircraft operating in the area. Their detection of May-Day calls contributed to quick search and rescue efforts. / More in this series / / / / / / / / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography

I took this one in a place called Red Cliff in in a small community called Outer Cove in Newfoundland. Red Cliff is an old radar station that has been deserted since 1965. Before the construction of the radar station, the location was used as an old coastal artillery site during World War II.

  • Roxy Rose by Gail Bridger

This rose I dedicate to a very dear friend that passed away last February. She struggle with cancer for a year before passing away. She a brain tumor and had cancer in the lining of her heart, god love her. She left behind many friends and a great family. I miss her dearly. / I was sitting in my computer room one day and it started raining while I was sitting there thinking about her and the struggle she had to face everyday. When the rain stopped, I got up and looked out the window and saw this beautiful rose full of life and I thought of her. I took this picture and I passed this rose on to anyone that donated money to her family for their struggles to make ends meet. Her name was Roxy. The drops of rain on the rose are teardrops from all that loved her. She will live on in our hearts forever. / This picture was taken in my garden in Port Hardy , BC. She also was orginally from Newfounland, I knew her since I was 13 years old.

I captured this picture in Bowring Park with my girlfriend. I thought it was very cool to see the tulip blooming with the tree still in winter’s grasp without buds.

  • Pariahs of the Arctic by Steve Rowsell

Great slabs of ice smashed off the resident iceberg rest on the rocky shore after floating in on the tireless waves of Gull Island Cove, Newfoundland, Canada. We took some of this (very cold and heavy) glacial offering back home, boiled it down, and brewed the most refreshing pot of tea we’d ever had. Cheers! More from this series

  • Descend into my Nightmare by Steve Rowsell

Large View Recommended. Taken inside the remains of a small utility shed. The ladder pictured descends about 20 feet into the darkness and serves as the only access point to one of the large tanks that were used to store water for the steam plant of the Red Cliff Radar Station. The graffiti on the wall says “Heaven” with an arrow pointing to the surface, and I decided to leave the faint reflections of debris at the bottom for a somewhat spooky feel. I did start to climb down, and got just below the surface before fear took over. I might actually go back some day with better equipment (eg long pants, gloves, a helmet, and some lights.) • Floored by Steve Rowsell

Large View Recommended. Taken inside the former Operations Room of the now-abandoned Red Cliff Radar Station. The concrete ceiling has all but collapsed, letting the elements in through the naked rebar. The Red Cliff Radar Station was installed to track the movements of aircraft sighted and transmitted speed, altitude, and heading information to a direction centre. • S.S. Kyle by Glenn Esau

Not exactly the capture I was looking for but I guess it is the best that I can get. Ths S.S. Kyle is a derelict ship that has been in the harbour of Harbour Grace since the late 1960’s. Many a picture has been taken of the SS Kyle which was part of the alphabet fleet that serviced many communities in rural Newfoundland until the late 1950’s. The reasoning behind the banner is because A member of the Detrout Redwings grew up in Harbour Grace

  • Power Plant by Steve Rowsell

Taken inside the former Power Plant of the now-abandoned Red Cliff Radar Station. The radar station used a steam plant to supply power to most of the buildings while it was in operation for over a decade. Newfoundlanders this is also your place on the Bubble…

Newfoundland is one of the most visually arresting places on Earth. The rugged and treacherous coastlines give way only to the unforgiving North Atlantic Ocean. It is a coastline marked with lighthouses that act as ever watching sentinels to welcome weary travellers home. It is a land of beautiful & quaint coastal towns, villages and cities. Newfoundland is a land visited by frozen giants from the North that create a sense of awe when seen by human eyes as they float down what is known as “Iceberg alley”. It is a land visited by massive whales during the summer that attract multitudes to the shorelines. It is a land inhabited by a people who will welcome you with open arms. It is a land you need to visit…
