This shot was taken from Ballachulish and shows Loch Leven and the Pap of Glencoe on the right side. The Pap of Glencoe (Scottish Gaelic: Sgurr na Cìche) is a mountain on the northern side of Glen Coe, in the Highlands of Scotland. It lies at the western end of the Aonach Eagach ridge, directly above the point where the River Coe enters Loch Leven. The Pap has a distinctive conical shape particularly when viewed from the west, and forms part of the “classic” view of the entrance to Glen Coe. The original Santa Cruz Light was completed in 1869 with the Fresnel lens located in a wooden cupola on the roof. New sea caves were forming under the cliffs and in March 1879 and again in 1881 the lightstation had to be moved inland. In May, 1948 the old light station was finally razed. In 1965 eighteen-year-old Mark Abbott drowned while surfing at the northern shore of Monterey Bay near the point where the old Santa Cruz Lighthouse once was. Mark’s parents used the insurance money to build a brick lighthouse near the site of the old lightstation. Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse is home to California’s first surfing museum and is the location each Christmas for “Caroling Under the Stars,” a Santa Cruz tradition which attracts hundreds of locals and visitors alike. / Same as the old Santa Cruz Lighthouse the new Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse is threatened by erosion, which keeps undermining the point. / / In Fall 2001, a second lighthouse was built in Santa Cruz, California. The Santa Cruz Breakwater (Walton), or Santa Cruz Harbor Light, was built on the West Jetty of Santa Cruz Harbor. Framed Print /

The Aspotogan Peninsula is on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Canada, about 35 miles from Halifax, the provincial capital. It has miles of beautiful beaches, coves and little harbours like this one at North West Cove, a tiny fishing community on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. Beautiful at any time of year, my favourite time is the Fall, when the surroundings forests are in full colour. Taken in October, 2005, with a Sony DSCF828 camera. /

A bright morning on the road between Calgary and Canmore,Alberta,Canada. Do these people ever get tired of the view?? I was standing on the far western edge of the vast Canadian prairie, and behind these homes are the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, reflecting the early morning sun. As most of you know by now, we live in the quiet (at present) and delightful Indian ocean side township of Yanchep, some 55 kms north of Perth in Western Australia. The beaches are less than 5 minutes away in the car and I took this photo yesterday afternoon, (Friday 20 Nov) / The nearest red roof building you can see is a beachside cafe/kiosk (their fish and chips are great by the way!) / On the left – and out of shot – a large housing development is taking place and the eventual plans show that we can expect to see promenades, cafes, small hotels etc. It wont be our sleepy little Yanchep for much longer. / Camera Sony DSC R1. / 24-120 Carl Zeiss Vario Zonnar lens with cp filter / f11 at 1/250th second / hand held

FEATURED NOV 2009 COMMUNITIES / Dubrovnik drenched by the morning sun. Shot Summer 2006, at 8 am, from the Old Town Walls, looking at the clocktower at the southern end of Stradun. One can see the extensive post-war repair work to the rooftops, and the difference between the origianl tiles, and the new regular ones. Dubrovnik has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1979. We are luckyenough to call this city our second home. Nikon D70s; Nikon 70-300mm lens; f/4.2; 1/2000sec; 75mm focal length.

The Western Maryland Railway Station in Cumberland, Maryland has been wonderfully restored to preserve the rich heritage of times past. This station is located at the very point where the C&O Canal ends. The canal was used to transport mail, coal and goods all the way between Washington, DC and Cumberland, and for distribution to points farther west. The Cumberland and Pennsylvania (C&P) and B&O and railroads were very important additions to the transportation system in the mid 1800s. The railroads eventually replaced the need for the C&O Canal completely. The railroads continued on to Ohio and beyond, but the canal was never extended beyond Cumberland. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad still operates tourist train excursions between Cumberland and Frostburg, MD. The dark history of the competing railroad lines and the C&O Canal is truly quite fascinating. The historic details and stories are kept vividly alive at Canal Place National Park, in Cumberland, Maryland, for all who are interested. This railway station is an integral part of the large National Park complex. The official website for the Western Maryland Railway Station at Canal Place contains the following: Originally opened in July 1913, this grand terminal rivaled stations in larger cities. The Station remained in use as a passenger terminal until 1958, serving the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Western Maryland Railway. Under the care of the Western Maryland Station Center, Inc., and subsequently the Canal Place Preservation & Development Authority, the building underwent a series of renovations, completed in 2000. The Station now houses the Authority’s offices as well as several other offices, visitor services, and attractions. The official website for Canal Place contains the following: In 1993 the State of Maryland created the Canal Place Preservation & Development Authority to oversee the preservation, development, and management of the Canal Place Preservation District, a designated area within the City of Cumberland surrounding the western end of the C&O Canal. This photo was taken on July 11th, 2009, with a Canon EOS 10D using a Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8L zoom lens, set to the 31mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/180th sec. at f/8. The camera’s ISO was set to 200. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a remote shutter release cable. Your comments are always welcome! Xativa, old town,Spain. The cobbled street here are barely wide enough to let a single car pass, when a car comes along pedestrians have to flatten themselves againt the walls for fear of being hit by a mirror. This lady stepped out of a doorway in front of me with her bag, the absence of any cars on the street, reminded me of my granny going out with her bag. After September 11, more attention fell on America’s law enforcement then ever before. For many of us, America’s law enforcement is simply the subject of television programs but for many, it is a sense of security that they are no doubt grateful. / This is a tribute of thanks to those who serve us to keep us all safe.
