BETTER VIEWED LARGER SOLD! – Framed Medium Size Print I call this Man O War because it reminds me of a old battleship or galleon. The former oil shale mining town lies at the end of the spectacular escarpments of the Capertee Valley, the largest enclosed valley in the southern hemisphere. In its heyday about 2,500 people lived in the township. Vertical sandstone cliffs stand guard over the crumbling vegetation covered structures lending a surreal impression. The site backs onto the Gardens Of Stone and Wolemni National Parks which are part of The Blue Mountains World Heritage Area Between 1939 and 1952 National Oil Proprietary Limited extracted oil from shale at their Glen Davis works in the Capertee Valley approximately 120 miles west of Sydney. The plant was built using much equipment salvaged from the closed Newnes shale oil works nearby. Although regarded as strategic for Australia’s wartime oil supply, the venture was plagued by technical, financial and political difficulties, and anticipated production was never fully realised. Viability of the shale mine and oil works were always questionable and they closed after a short and troubled life. This shot shows the Retorts Brickwork of No.1 Retort bench still stands, but little remains of No.2 Retorts. Shale was fed from above and moved downward through the firebrick tubes as it was heated and burnt. Oil gases were released via side off-take flues, and ash was drawn out the bottom by rotating screws. Gradually nature is reclaiming the buildings as we watch Australias history disapear….why? I saw this old tower standing in the middle of the endless polders from miles away. It looks very mysterious in this delapitated state. especialy the carved heads near the roof make it look rather creepy. It used to be an old windmill, puming water out of the low lying polders into the nearby canal.

The winding wheel at the now disused Cefn Coed colliery in South Wales. In it’s heyday, the mine, at depths of over 2,500 feet (800m), was the deepest anthracite mine in the world.

A miners shack, covered entirely in flattened tin cans is a typical example of the ingenuity that was required to survive harsh summers and winters, virtually in the “middle of nowhere” during the 19th century gold boom.
The Lady Isabella The Great Laxey Wheel (or Lady Isabella), situated in the beautiful Glen Mooar valley, is possibly the Isle of Man’s best known landmark. The wheel was constructed in 1854 to pump water from Laxey’s zinc and lead mines. It is the largest, working water wheel in the world, with a diameter of 72.5 feet (22 metres). In its heyday the wheel was capable of pumping 250 gallons (1136 litres) of water a minute from the mines 1500 feet (450 metres) below ground. The mines (which once employed 600 miners) closed in 1929, leaving the Lady Isabella facing an uncertain future. However, the Manx Government stepped in to acquire the Wheel and surrounding lands and having undergone extensive restoration, the Wheel is now in the hands of the Manx National Heritage. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase to the viewing platform above the Wheel, explore the Mines Trail and even enter a small section of the mine. Huge gears, once used to drive mining machinery, are at rest but their form and precision make a statement that precedes time – and function.
Boston/Thompson’s Mills is a unique reminder of times past, chronicling the past 150 years of Oregon rural life. It is the oldest water-powered grain mill in the state: its system of waterways, dams, control gates, ditches and dikes has moved water from the Calapooia River to the mill head gates since 1858. A water right that predates statehood produced the water flow that ran the milling machines. Pioneer families came with their grain crops and left with the flour that would keep them through the coming year. / Boston/Thompson Mill stands as a symbol of the initiative and perseverance of Oregon’s early settlers. In 1979, in recognition of the important role that it has played in the development of Oregon, the mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. . .” {p 7-15} Thompson’s Mills State Heritage Site opened as Oregon newest state park on Dec. 9 2007.
