This is one of my favourites. One of my biggest fans protests every time I take this large format print down from her office in order to show it to others. The imagery shows how in Spain there is a strong connection between agriculture and the sea. I really love the mermaid on the wall.

“View on the River Douro, Oporto” was featured in Iberia (13 November 2009) Canon PowerShot SX1 IS, 1/800 s, f/4, ISO 80 Bridges and port wine are what characterises Oporto, Portugal’s gracious northern capital and second largest city after Lisbon. Oporto sits astride a great gorge at the point where the River Douro enters the Atlantic, and although it is mainly industrial, the city centre has plenty of charm with some art treasures, medieval cathedrals and museums, along narrow streets sporting wrought-iron balconies and bright splashes of potted geraniums. The main reason tourists visit Oporto is to sample its legendary port wine, processed, blended and aged in the various lodges of the Vila Nova da Gaia district across the river from the city, via the spectacular two-tiered Dom Luis bridge. The city also has an historic riverside district called Ribeira, which is undergoing restoration and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage / WordTravels The bridge seen from afar is Ponte Dom Luís, erected in 1861-66 by the Société Belge de Willebroeck to plans by Théophile Seyrig, a former assistant to Eiffel. This is a double-decker road/Metro bridge connecting Oporto with Vila Nova de Gaia. Its span is 558ft and it is 223ft high with a 26ft wide roadway which for many years carried single-file, two-way traffic on both levels. Pedestrians could freely cross both the upper and lower levels on narrow pavements. Until the 1990s the top deck also carried trolley buses. After extensive works and installation of catenary, the upper deck started to carry the new Oporto Metro services across the Douro to Gaia in 2005, whilst the lower level remains a road traffic bridge. This picture is included in the Europe Porto (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpoɾtu]), also Oporto in English, is Portugal’s second city and capital of the Norte NUTS II region. The city is located in the estuary of the Douro river in northern Portugal. The largest city in the region, Porto is considered the economic and cultural heart of the entire region. The city, which had an estimated population of about 220,000 (est.2008), lies at the centre of the political Greater Metropolitan Area of Porto, with a population of slightly more than 1.7 million (est. 2008), and is the main agglomeration of northern Portugal. The city of Porto comprises 15 civil parishes. The historic centre of Porto was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. / The World Heritage site is defined in two concentric zones; the “Protected area”, and within it the “Classified area”. The Classified area comprises the medieval borough located inside the 14th-century Romanesque wall. One of Portugal’s most internationally famous products, Port wine, is named after the city because it is produced in, and shipped from the area. or, more precisely, from Vila Nova de Gaia, a city just across the river which belongs to the same conurbation. The country was also named after the Latin name of Porto, Portus Cale. Porto district is one of the most industrialised districts in Portugal, and Maia, one of Porto’s satellite cities, has the largest industrial park in Portugal. Canon EOS 40D

On of the most spectacular buildings we ever saw: The Mezquita in Cordoba, Spain! We were so touched and fascinated by the architecture, combining Islamic and Christian traditions!!! / by Klaus
I took this from a bus, while traveling between Madrid and Valencia, in Spain. I have no idea what this little village is called, but it was like something out of a movie. We past several of these on the 6 hour bus trip across the country. Spain has some spectacular scenery and quaint villages that almost seem trapped in time. Layered the original image twice, adjusted contrast and tone slightly. Added a texture layer from www.deviantart.com free use stock. Layered the texture several times over, adjusting the constrast, saturation and lightness on each to vary the colour and tone. Plaza Mayor, Xativa, Spain. Friday Market, 20th November. This capture was taken from a side street leading onto the old square. The absence of traffic here on market days gives it a wonderful feeling of days gone by. Normally the square is full of cars, trucks and fumes, but, every tuesday and friday it is closed to traffic ´till the market packs up at around 1.30pm / Fugifilm Finepix S1000fd / f/7.1 Expo 1/105 ISO-64

A group for photos taken on the Iberian Peninsula: Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, Andorra and technically a tiny bit of France!

Number of image uploads not limited, but please make sure they are of good quality. The “Here I am next to some statue like every other tourist” photo is not the sort we’re looking for. Offer your most creative and most insightful interpretations of the cultures and countries that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Reveal something new, expected, irresistible about this part of the world. Please no images of just flowers etc, as they could be taken anywhere in the world.
Oh and I like to have fun too, so I will, if I wish, enter the challenges!
