If a photo is supposed to elicit emotion in the eyes of the viewer, I don’t know if this one makes me more horrified or impressed. I was raised on a farm in Iowa and just seeing this young Amish girl barefoot in front of a disk makes me cringe. But then I am impressed that she can handle a team of one horse and six mules with such ease which makes me wonder if by being barefoot she can feel the board and keep her balance a lot better. This is a view I’ve enjoyed seeing only once since I moved here and I was lucky enough that it happened within 1/4 mile from my house. I couldn’t believe my luck. A scene that could have been from the past. Featured in the “Horse and Rider” Group – 11/15/09.

A long standing militray tradition honoring the dead soldier, The Riderless Horse is present is every Sarasota Veterans Day Parade. Shot in Sarasota Florida See info below: Caparisoned Horse The solemn walk of a fully saddled riderless horse with the riding boots reversed in the stirrups is a military honor dating back to antiquity. The caparisoned — ornamentally covered — horse symbolizes the ancient custom of sacrificing a horse at a warrior’s burial and that the warrior had fallen and would not ride again. In the time of Genghis Khan and Tamerlane, the Mongols and Tartars believed the sacrificed horse’s spirit followed its master and served him in the afterworld. Tradition allows a caparisoned horse to follow the casket of an Army or Marine Corps officer with the rank of colonel or above and of a U.S. president in funeral processions

No one comes to a discussion of the horse empty handed: we arrive with the burden of six thousand years of accumulated knowledge, gratitude, myth and hearsay. Our two species are permanently and inextricably linked. Over the centuries we have trained horses to perform successfully in many spheres of the human experience, including agriculture, sport and war. They have lived and died beside us and it is hard to imagine what our lives would be like if their domestication had never occurred.” Andrew McLean.
Dressage is a French word, which roughly translates as “training”. Dressage is a basic training of all riding horses. Showjumpers, Show Hacks and Pleasure horses will all benefit from dressage training – dressage training creates a horse that is more comfortable, safe and pleasurable to ride. This groups goal is to depict safe and humane training of the horse in all equestrian disciplines. It is hoped submissions will include pure Dressage, Showjumping, Riening, Eventing, Racing, Hunting, Trail Riding, Endurance and Showing to name a few.
The one rule is that all art must include the human partner be it rider, groom or even owner.
Each submission must depict the bond between the horse and mankind.
“Wherever man has left his footprints in the long ascent from barbarism to civilization, we find the hoofprint of a horse beside it.”
John Trotwood Moore
