Chester Races 2009
I’ve photographed this team of working horses on a couple of occasions. Their colours certainly compliment each other.

This little rider was carried around on a horse with his father holding him for several years. This year he is riding solo and doing very well! Soon he will be doing the standard and not-so -standard tricks his brothers do. I shot this on my Canon Eos Rebel XTi witha 28-300mm Tamron lens at a rodeo in southern NM. It was taken at 1/320 sec., f 9, focal length 238.0 mm and ISO 400. This was in the TOP TEN in the Horse & Rider Group the June Challange on 6 -29-09. Here’s my grandpa, when he was young, and when he first began ranching. He was so full of the devil, absolutely fearless, full of humor, and perfectly equipped for the hardships of frontier life. He was raising horses here, on land he had homesteaded with his father. His ever present cigarette was in his mouth, a Lucky Strike… He always smelled of cigarettes and leather, and horses…and sometimes whiskey…. The ranch was west of Dupuyer, Montana, near Swift Dam. I did not take this photo, but it was handed down to me, from my grandmother, before her death. I love my heritage, and my ancestors, and I wanted to share where I came from…

The salt trade is still going in Mali, this group travelled for 35 days and nearly reached Toumbouctou, its a very hard life for the animals but also for the men, they walk for hours non stop even during the night. When the heavy salt tablets are taken of their backs , they can way over 30 kg! the donkeys gather together in this lovely position 3 or 4 together and hang over eachothers backs, what a lovely way to rest.Mali / serie of 3 Watch this
Hunter Jumper by trade, but cannot get over the beauty in western gear.
This horseback rider was concentrating so hard on the flag that I hit the trigger to capture his intensity. He was part of the Melbourne Cup parade on Monday. I shot a series of vertical frames showing his face clearly, but this – the only horizontal frame I shot – just captures the spirit of his task. There is a poignant touch to this image, because we were told that this small group of four or five riders were from the Victorian alpine town of Marysville. As any Aussie will tell you, Marysville was all but obliterated during the Black Saturday bushfires in February. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F5.6, 1/350, ISO 200, focal length 300mm. 120-1004

It is one of those things. I hope you understand.

No one comes to a discussion of the horse empty handed: we arrive with the burden of six thousand years of accumulated knowledge, gratitude, myth and hearsay. Our two species are permanently and inextricably linked. Over the centuries we have trained horses to perform successfully in many spheres of the human experience, including agriculture, sport and war. They have lived and died beside us and it is hard to imagine what our lives would be like if their domestication had never occurred.” Andrew McLean.
Dressage is a French word, which roughly translates as “training”. Dressage is a basic training of all riding horses. Showjumpers, Show Hacks and Pleasure horses will all benefit from dressage training – dressage training creates a horse that is more comfortable, safe and pleasurable to ride. This groups goal is to depict safe and humane training of the horse in all equestrian disciplines. It is hoped submissions will include pure Dressage, Showjumping, Riening, Eventing, Racing, Hunting, Trail Riding, Endurance and Showing to name a few.
The one rule is that all art must include the human partner be it rider, groom or even owner.
Each submission must depict the bond between the horse and mankind.
“Wherever man has left his footprints in the long ascent from barbarism to civilization, we find the hoofprint of a horse beside it.”
John Trotwood Moore
