Excerpt from ‘Patterns’

BY AMY LOWELL
I walk down the garden paths,
And all the daffodils
Are blowing, and the bright blue squills.
I walk down the patterned garden paths
In my stiff, brocaded gown.
With my powdered hair and jewelled fan,
I too am a rare
Pattern. As I wander down
The garden paths.

In art, a pattern is a repetition of specific visual elements.

The dictionary.com definition of “pattern” is:

an arrangement of repeated or corresponding parts, decorative motifs, etc
a decorative design.

We subconsciously enjoy looking at patterns because they embody a sense of harmony. Perhaps that is why patterns feature so prominently in artwork from all different cultures! An artist achieves a pattern through the use of colors (children playing with ‘Lego’ know this instinctively), lines (think: Op Art) or shapes (as with mosaics, tessellations, etc.).

Frannie and I chose these examples of works involving patterns for the midweek features, and hope you will find some time to congratulate the clever ladies whose wonderful art appears today.
