Topic: Group News / Challenge extended!! Cities and Large Towns in Wessex! :-) Hi! I looked at it… I am tempted to say yes…. if it’s a Cathedral then it means (in the UK anyway) that it is a city/large town. However the shot, which is gorgeous by the way, does not scream urbanity/city life etc. You have inspired the NEXT challenge which will be for Cathedrals. :-) |

Topic: Group News / Challenge extended!! Cities and Large Towns in Wessex! :-) So far we have 2 entries that do not even have a hint of “rural” about them….. however 2 entries do not really a challenge make ;-) However, the challenge has not gone to voting yet so there is still time to add work…. If you are unsure what we want think… High streets (for example ones showing Boots, Smiths etc, other ways to know this is not just a rural quiet town) Poole, Bournemouth, Weymouth, Portsmouth, Southampton, Havant, Aldershot, Salisbury, Bristol, Bath and I am sure there are tons more :-) Landmarks… spinnaker tower, shopping malls, that banner thing in Bristol in the city centre High rises… there are plenty of these around, housing areas that shout “hey we’re a little more urban than the neighbouring areas”. I know that there are works from towns in the group and that there are plenty more around Redbubble… while country and nature is indeed lovely to look at, I know these combined counties can offer more :-P extended by 1 week for now |

Topic: Group News / Challenge launched Hi New challenge for towns/cities… does not have to be a shopping alley (pictured) could be a view across a city but must certainly show that this is a large town/city just by looking at the image. (ie not a village…) if it has a chain (eg McD or Wetherspoons or Boots/WHSmiths etc) in it then it qualifies… if you are standing “over” the city and can see “built up” areas all around then it’s OK…. hey you know all the cities and towns if you live in the areas! I automatically think of Portsmouth, Southampton, Salisbury as I come from Portsmouth. I would count the centres of towns such as Havant and Aldershot etc too… but for the challenge let’s focus on the “living” side of the counties… the shopping centres, the grunge, the stuff that makes the place different to a village or holt :-) I shall be nagging you come voting time too as I really would like this to qualify as a VOUCHER CHALLENGE. :-) J. |

Topic: Group News / Features for 23rd April 2012 This time I was looking for “signs of life”. There are many beautiful shots of the countryside and coast in this group but in such a vast area, I figured it can’t be all nature and history all the time…. A bustling harbour, a city “skyline” and some high streets/shopping arcades show a little more of the region. Please take a moment to congratulate the artists :-)

Topic: Group News / Double features - January/February 2012. Well, what a year this has been so far. They say that things happen all at once and I guess they are right. Anyway I am now catching up and as this group is usually the one that suffers most because I work alphabetically, I chose today to start at Z… or rather at W. Coming from Hampshire with a parent who could drive, I took the beauty of the country for granted… all the cottages of my jigsaw puzzles were just normal for me. Since I left and moved to other places AND flew the nest some 17 years ago… and still cannot drive! I have come to forget how awesome thatched roofs, little country lanes and the likes are. Don’t get me wrong, even in London you are never too far away from some semblance of country. I am excited that there is going to be a skyscraper finally and that I can see it every day as it gets built either from the train or from work if I stand up, walk over there and lean across a platform just so… but sometimes, just sometimes I need to go back to my roots and celebrate the wonders of outside a city. This group is certainly one of my favourites, it does keep me grounded and while it might not appear that way, I DO think about this group every day and think “ooh if I go to this or that place, I can add work to Wessex”…. turns out that I generally don’t go, but that’s a different story :-) YOUR STORY IS FEATURES… Here they are for eternal glory :-D Joanne.

Topic: Group News / Thank you all for your patience. I intended to come back a week or 2 ago, with the Jan features and so on… however life… and some stairs! got in the way. Forgive me for not wanting to go into it again and for needing to save time to get off the computer. Please also forgive that this is almost word for word crossposted in other groups…. however this journal will explain some of it. |
