People watching
People watching in city cafes is common. Passe perhaps. But always
interesting.
I try to imagine what a conversation could become. Awkward. Uplifting.
A memory to treasure.
The reality? Daunting. Even for a country girl, who smiles and nods her way
in greeting far too easily for the big city.
In Melbourne, even when I’d been there for over a decade, some people
could still guess. You’re from the country.
Apparently, it is something to do with casual eye contact, not darting or
lowering my eyes when passing by. I like to smile, extending my crooked
imperfect teeth to the sunshine or rain, just in case a smile is what is
needed.
Conversations are more delicate than a smile. Some days I challenge myself.
Just one word. It can be hers to grip, his to grin at; just one word can change
any outlook.
But the word needs to whisper itself to you.
When lips are pulled tight in self-disgust, and eyes are red, leaking rage or
despair, I have heard kindness.
When hands are clenched and the shoulders seem tense, I have listened, and whispered peace.
When eye contact is made, it is not always easy to say what you hear. At a
hospital, I once looked into eyes so black and frightening, that my word
recoiled to consequence. It could not be said, but I felt warned, wary and
wrapped myself in extra layers of protection.
Be careful with your words, your smile, your glance. But if you dare, take the
leap, make your words dance.
Whenever I have uttered even something as common as Hello, I can smile.
For it might be the only kind word someone hears that day.
And I consider words gifts that are best when given away!
