To the right is Chappell Field, a part of Blue Knob State Park on the extension of Pavia Road (4035), and is frequently the site of fairs and concerts and happy picnickers. Over my shoulder and between the trees is a magnificent view of the valley which I’ve tried to capture over and over again … one of these days I’ll get it right. Also known as Pinetown Bridge, built by Elias McMellen in 1867 for $4500. It was washed off its base by the flood waters of Hurricane Agnus in 1972. Nearby Amish workers rebuilt the bridge the following Spring and raised it to 17.5 ft. above the average water level to avoid future flood damage. Location: 100 ft. east of Pinetown and Bridge Roads in Upper Leacock Township 2 miles southwest of Brownstown. Added in 1980, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as structure number 80003527.

Featured in Streams & Stream Crossings Featured member of the group Streams & Stream / Crossings this week!! The bridge was built in 1878 by John Smith and Samuel Stauffer. Jackson’s Sawmill Covered Bridge or Eichelberger’s Covered Bridge is a covered bridge that spans the West Branch of the Octoraro Creek in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. A county-owned and maintained bridge, its official designation is the West Octoraro #1 Bridge. The bridge is purportedly the only covered bridge in the county that is not built perpendicular to the stream it crosses due to the placement of the sawmill on one side of the bridge and the rock formations faced by the builders on the other side.
Featured in Historic Places 11/09 In 1860 Ferdinand Wood was contracted by Cecil County to build a bridge over Lower Hills Fording. Its red roof and walls were added to protect the wooden frame from the elements. In 1927 the area around the bridge was purchased by William Dupont as part of his recreational farm and named Foxcatcher Farm. Upon his death the Department of Natural Resources took over the land. By then the bridge was showing the signs of age. In 1950 a truck broke through the floorboards and fell into the creek below. It wasn’t until 1992 that the Department of Natural Resources rebuilt it. While false work supported the original roof, the bridge underneath was completely redone with a steel frame. The old Kingpost splices and Burr Arch chord timber was preserved and used to maintain the bridge’s original appearance. It is registered with the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges. / This area was also the training center for 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. In 1994 it received the State’s Historic Civil Engineering Landmark Award. Taken with a Nikon D90 and a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED Lens No software added!

Lime Valley Mill Covered Bridge Also known as the Strasburg Bridge or The Pequea #8 Bridge, this structure is located in West Lampeter Township in Lancaster County, PA. It spans the Pequea Creek at a length of 103 feet and features a single span, wooden, double Burr arch trusses design with the addition of steel hanger rods. It was built in 1871 by Joseph Cramer, the only Lancaster County Covered Bridge that he is credited with constructing. Added in 1980, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as structure number 80003535.
