Neither of these dogs would be here now if they hadn’t been rescued. That cute little Christmas PUPPY is yesterday’s news in myriad households by New Year’s Day and is costing tax payers countless dollars shortly thereafter. The collection, care, and disposal of man’s best-friends is BIG BUSINESS! / Before you purchase that cuddly little ball of fur for that next special present, know what you’re getting into – dogs can’t be put in the toybox when you’re tired of them. Truthfully identify your child’s attention span and your willingness to assume another personal responsibility. / THERE ARE TOO FEW…LUCKY ONES IN AMERICA! Taken in Washington DC… a double exposed photo of men at Vietnam memorial and the huge flag they had up… just an amazing image of what these men fight for even today still!
The grave site of a valiant young woman in Arlington National Cemetery. She is one of approximately 4,346 members of the United States military who have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count as of September 29, 2009. The rain and clouds finally cleared, just in time to allow me to get out to the lake while the leaves are still showing their finest colors. This is the shoreline of Rose Valley Lake in Gamble Township, north central Pennsylvania. Rose Valley is 5 miles east of the community of Trout Run. When you visit a beautiful place like Rose Valley Lake, please leave it exactly as you found it! Your food wrappers and empty containers must go back home with you for proper disposal. I had to do some cleaning up to be able to capture this pristine shot. Let’s all do the right thing, OK. Everyone benefits when we keep our “green” places green! This photo was taken on October 10th, 2009. It was shot with a Canon EOS 10D using a Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L zoom lens set to 90mm. The shutter speed was 1/45th sec. at f/8. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. Your comments are always welcome! Constructive criticism is appreciated. © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist. At one time the Red-tailed Hawks and other raptors were on the decline in Oregon. because of DDT insecticide caused pesticide poisoning in birds forty years ago. Today it’s still with us, along with other toxic pesticides and herbicides that kill birds. In 1962, Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring”, highlighted the harmful effects of DDT and other pesticides on birds. The hardest hit species included birds of prey: Peregrine Falcons, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, Eurasian Sparrow hawks, Osprey, Bald Eagles, and White-tailed Eagles. Brown Pelicans and herons also faced severe losses. Many people heeded Carson’s words and the scientific data backing her up, and DDT, the most notorious pesticide, was banned in most of the West by 1972. Today, many of the affected birds have largely recovered, but with other species in serious decline, it’s important that we don’t forget the lessons learned. Every year I see more raptors in the Fern Ridge Wetlands in Lane County,Oregon. / Taken with a Canon SX10 IS on 5/15/09, TV 1/251, AV F5.72, ISO 80, and Focal length 100.00mm or 35mm equiv. of 560.00mm.
The Daniels & Fisher (D&F) Tower is a distinctive Denver, Colorado landmark. Built as part of the Daniels & Fisher department store in 1910, it was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi at the time, at a height of 325 feet (99 m). Modeled after The Campanile (St. Mark’s Bell Tower) at the Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy, the 20-floor clock tower has clock faces on all four sides. Daniels & Fisher were later bought out by the May Company in 1958, and the store vacated the tower. When the store was demolished (ca. 1971), the tower was saved and renovated into lofts and businesses in 1981. It stands today in downtown Denver. August 15, 2009: Through the cobbled streets along preserved, restored or reconstructed historic buildings in the heart of Old Sacramento I was heading out north-west towards Eureka and Crescent City, CA. Located on the banks of the Sacramento River, Old Town Sacramento, which is known for its rich historical contributions to California, began as a trading post, and it experienced explosive growth. Today with dozens of historic Gold Rush-era buildings Old Town Sacramento has been named a National Landmark, and a portion of it is designated as a State Historic Park. Over 5 million people a year are drawn here for its museums, shops and restaurants. Before I left town that morning I photographed this old Steamer-Building right at the Sacramento riverfront docks and the boardwalk at the Western end of K street accross the railroad tracks to take a bit of the old wild west feeling home with me. Homage to Old Town Sacramento, CA / Framed Print /

The purpose of this group is primarily for art submitted to monthly challenges, but also to promote the United States and to inspire creativity. Art, representing the challenge themes, from all 50 States, the District of Columbia and the 6 inhabited U.S. Territories is welcomed. Non-U.S. citizens are welcomed to participate with representations of their experiences in the U.S., either as residents or visitors.
Please remember that there will always be a challenge that someone can’t enter, because of where they live or have not experienced. The United States is a HUGE country and our diversities are immense. We cover 6 time zones, 11 with the Territories. We vary from cities to rural, barns to sky scrapers. People live in 1-room log cabins, others in gigantic mansions. Some have every electric gadget available, some live by candlelight and wood heat. Some people produce their own food, others have to buy it at a store. There are farmers who milk in a high tech computerized parlor, while others milk by hand into a pail. Some ride to work in a jet, some by horse and buggy. Bears in zoos… and back yards! Pots of geraniums on a balcony; a thousand acres of wheat. What is your worry, muggers or mountain lions? Is it “Youse guys” or “Y’all”? Winter in the United States ranges from -30 to 80 degrees. We have 3 oceans, 2 seas, a salt lake, and a bazillion fresh water lakes that include 5 Great Lakes; mountains, flat plains, deserts and even our rain forests vary from tropical and conifer.
