I love magnolias. They seem so pure and unflecked. For some reason it invokes a sence of peacefulness when I see a magnolia tree in full bloom. I wanted to add words to the image and found a beautiful poem called “Silence II” by Elaine Maria Upton on a website called www.judithporton.tripod.com (/poetry/elaine_maria_upton_silence.html) and used one of the verses on the background of the image. Another source of inspiration is Asian art, where sometimes the background is golden. This may not be your every day, conventional card but I could imagine giving it to someone special, who is perhaps finding it difficult to find a bit of silence or inner peace in their lives. As the third ‘Auspicious Symbol’ of Buddhism, the WHEEL (sanskrit-chakra) consists of three basic parts: the hub, the rim, and the spokes (8). Its underlying form is that of a circle, which is recognized across all traditions as a shape that is complete and perfect in itself, qualities which inform the teachings of the Buddha too. / Individually, the rim represents the elements of limitation, the hub is the axis of the world, and the eight spokes denote the Eightfold path set down by Buddha, which leads to the cessation of all suffering. / A further esoteric interpretation makes reference to the three trainings which form an integral part of Buddhist meditative practice, associating each of the three parts of the wheel with one such practice. / The symbolism is: / HUB-training in moral discipline. Through this practice the mind is supprted and stabilized. Thus it is the practice of moral discipline that upholds our meditation, just like supporting axis of the world. / SPOKES-stand for the correct application of wisdom, which cuts off ignorance and ends suffering. / RIM- denotes concentration, which holds the entire meditative practice together, just as the wheel of life is held together by its rim. / The wheel evolved as a symbol of the Buddha’s teachings and as an emblem of the Chakravartin or ‘wheel turner’, identifying the wheel as the Dharmachakra or ‘wheel of law’. The Tibetan term for Dharmachakra literally means “the wheel of transformation”. The wheels swift motion serves as an apt metaphor for the rapid spiritual change engendered by the teachings of Buddha. Hence, Buddha’s first discourse at the Deer Park in Sarnath is known as the first turning of the wheel of dharma. Likewise, his subsequent discourses at Rajgir and Shravasti are known as the second and third turnings of the wheel of dharma. In Sanskrit the word anahata – means unhurt, un-struck and unbeaten. Anahata is associated with the ability to make decisions outside of the realm of karma. In Manipura and below, man is bound by the laws of karma, and the fate he has in store for him. In Anahata, one is making decisions, ‘following your heart’, based upon one’s higher self, and not from the unfulfilled emotions and desires of lower nature. The wish-fulfilling tree, kalpa taru, resides here, symbolizing the ability to manifest whatever you wish to happen in the world. 2009 Acrylic on Canvas 47×39” This piece was recently on exhibit. In my life, I have lived in many Haunted houses, especially when I was a Kid in the South (USA) and the Mid West, and the South West. I was never afraid because Angels alway protected me. UNTIL 1990 I was remodeling this old house in the Central San Joaquin Valley (California). I would work during the day on Artwork and Photography Commissions, and remodeling this old house, and still manage to paint a little bit. Working 16, 18 hours a day for weeks on end. The point been the house was Haunted, but I was so tired and living alone, I would fall asleep (deep sleep) as soon as I hit the bed. I would awake now and then from screams and noises, I would just say a little prayer, tell the spirits to go to sleep, and i would go back to sleep. 6 months into this routine I was phyically awake, the lights were out, and it was freezing in the middle of May 1991. The Central San Joaquin in May its pretty warm, even at night. but it was freezing, and….then a deep Evil set-in I could feel it, I was so frighten, like never in my life, that I couldn’t move, I couldn’t remember the words to my prayer, It was pitch black, no lights, no neighbors, its out in the boonies, worse, there is Evil in the room. Then a deep terrifying voice said “Get Out”. Believe me I wanted to, my heart was beating so fast, I was Terrified, couldn’t move, seem like it would never end, or my heart would explode. Then suddenly I felt this warmth and a peace I can’t describe, only have felt it a few times before. I heard this flutter of wings and I felt so safe and secure, and warm and a low whisper said ” Leave now my son”, It took me less then 2 minutes to find my Flashlight, get dressed, grab, my truck keys didn’t even close the front door, run to the garage jump in my truck , took me less then 5 minutes (half the time) to hit the main highway and head for town and my studio. I never went back, needless to say I took a bath on that house, but I feel very Blessed, that I got out with my Life. I have been in many situations where I could have died and actually did in a major surgery, (but that’s another story, true like this one) but I was never afraid, like I was terrified that night 3am May 1991, I thought I was going to die that night. Angels whisper to us if we but only listen Reynaldo

The highest peak of these mountains is Pu’u Kukui at 5,788 feet. ‘Iao Valley is the most famous valley of this mountain range visible in this image shrouded by dense cloud cover at the far left on the horizon. Kahakuloa is on the right and the island of Moloka’i is on the horizon on the right shrouded in dense cloud cover. “Vog is a portmanteau of the words “volcanic” and “smog,” and a volcanic smog is formed when sulfur dioxide and other gases emitted by an erupting volcano mix with oxygen and moisture in the presence of sunlight. The term is most often applied to the island of Hawaiʻi, where the Kīlauea volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983. Kīlauea emits an estimated 2,000 tons of vog every day. Vog is a volcanic mixture that includes gases and aerosols which react with oxygen, moisture, and sunlight.” Here is an interesting story in the New York Times just one week after I took this photograph Information from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Hawaiian Vog: Where There’s Smoke – There is Something Brewing Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / My images do not belong to the public domain. It is perhaps the most renowned windsurfing site in the world, The waves here are largest during the winter, and break across a system of reefs that extend across the bay. During the summer the waves are smaller. Ho’okipa is ideal for windsurfing because of its large well-shaped waves and strong winds. The name Ho‘okipa means “hospitality” in Hawaiian. While ever-present strong winds and powerful currents do not make the beach a place for beginners, experienced surfers and windsurfers continually flock to Ho’okipa for both recreation and windsurfing competitions. There are four distinct surf breaks at Ho’okipa. Pavilions is the break furthest east, off the lookout parking. West from it, facing the main parking, is Middles break. Usually these are both left to surfers. The area between the two, which catches fewer breaking sets, is sometimes referred to as Girlie Bowl or Green Trees. Next further west, facing the lifeguard tower and the narrow sand beach launch, is H‘Poko or Point. It is the most popular break for windsurfing, and generally breaks as a right. With the prevailing trade wind direction being east to east-north-east, this is most frequently down-the-line sailing on starboard tack (wind from right when standing on the beach). Yet further west, past the rocky point, is Lanes, which generally breaks as a left. Under relatively rare conditions, known as Kona, the prevailing winds become southwest, and Lanes is ridden down-the-line on Port tack (wind from left when standing on the beach). This only occurs a few days out of every year. Ho’okipa Beach is occasionally a tourist attraction in the winter time because of spectacularly large surf. In the afternoon on 15 December 2004, for example, many tourists visited the beach to see waves as large as 30 feet pound the shore. Officials warn visitors to stay away from the water, as the surf may be very deadly. Despite this, Ho’okipa is not an ideal site for true big-wave riding, as the waves close out when their faces approach about 25 feet. During such episodes, other deep-water breaks offer more rideable waves, an example of which is Jaws, offshore Peahi, Maui, which is a very short car ride from Ho’okipa. Information Source: Wikipedia

Written in 1923, this poem was published in The Yale Review in October of that year. Some say the poem helped Frost to win a Pulitzer Prize. Only eight lines long, this poem is still considered one of Frost’s best. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” is also featured in the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and its film adaptation. The American rock band New Found Glory also used the title for their album of the same name...Wiki… Nothing Gold Can Stay” explicitly describes identical moments in three temporal cycles: the daily, the yearly, and the mythic. In each case the poem depicts the moment when the promise of perfection declines into something lesser. Gold unabashedly becomes a symbol–a very traditional one–for the highest value and most radiant beauty. Spring, dawn, and Eden are each a sort of Golden Age, an impermanent paradise. / What lies ahead is never stated overtly, but it is inarguably present by implication. Day is inevitably followed by night. Summer is succeeded by fall and winter. The green leaf eventually turns brown and decays. The loss of Eden gave Adam and Eve mortality. Human youth, by implication, is followed by maturity, old age, and ultimately death. The golden moment, therefore, is all the more precious because it is transitory. By focusing on a single moment, Frost evokes an entire day, year, lifetime, and human history...Dana Gioia. / / / / /
