Sometimes you need the freedom to choose your own illusion when you are spending time in your own magic place. This reflection of the waves was taken from the railing of a cruise ship. Following a military deployment my wife and I took a cruise to the Caribbean. We went all out and got a room with a balcony and I found myself spending a lot of time with a Margarita in my hand enjoying the ocean colors and the beautiful scenery that passed by. It was a striking change from the Middle East. In fact, one can say that it was a refreshing change from the tan tones of the desert. The desert has its own beauty but I love the ocean. As I was leaning on the balcony enjoying the view I happened to gaze down and notice the beautiful reflection of the waves in the Plexiglas below the railing. The reflection was amazing. But I found that I had to really lean forward over the railing to get a shot that looked right without showing myself, the railing or something else undesirable in it. In fact, I learned from this shot to let some shots go if they are just too stupid to try to get. I learned to pay as much attention to my own safety as I do to getting the shot! I really don’t have any ambition to be on the 6 pm news…with a film at 11 talking about the stupid American who plummeted off of something while trying to take a beautiful photo. A perfect winters morning, great light and a rare perfect reflection. I took many shots that morning but had to wait a few weeks to get my film back to see if any had come out. This was the one where everything came together, composition, light and technique. To balance the amazing disparity in light between the shadowed foreground and the bright background I used an ND4 Graduated filter. This filter balances the exposure by only letting one quarter of the light through the top part of the lens as compared to the bottom. The eye is so sophisticated that it automatically compensates for these differences so judging the effects of the filter is basically an educated guess and because I shoot on film I have no on location way of assessing the results and re-shooting if I mess it up. This shot is one of my all time personal favourites. It was also the group avitar for ‘All water and seascapes’ a little while back and was my first laminated print sale on the bub. BEST VIEWED LARGE Night time down at Berowra Waters Marina (on Berowra Creek) complete with Fog and a Ferry that was out of service. It was so peaceful and occasionally the silence was broken by someone making their way home from work, the sound of a small aluminium boat. Once at home the silence would return. I would love to say this is another of Sydney’s hidden gems but hidden it is not, but rather popular on weekends and why not as it is a beautiful location. I made my way down here feeling frustrated with living life in a rut and wanting to feel like I had done something other than work eat and sleep. With an image of a ferry underway, lights blazing, cutting it’s way across the water and through the fog only to discover the ferry was under repairs. Still it meant that other photographic opporunities where then explored and this is one of them. This fence line caught my attention early one morning when I was out photographing the sunrise in Wilsonville, Oregon. This was taken with a Canon XT and a 18-55. I was trying to capture more of the “glow” in the fall leaves than my camera was able to, but still a nice shot. Featured in Pacific NW Art / Featured in Rural Around The Globe

Female House Finch eating fruit from a bittersweet vine in my backyard in northeast Iowa. House Finch The House Finch is a recent introduction from western into eastern North America (and Hawaii), but it has received a warmer reception than other arrivals like the European Starling and House Sparrow. That’s partly due to the cheerful red head and breast of males, and to the bird’s long, twittering song, which can now be heard in most of the neighborhoods of the continent. If you haven’t seen one recently, chances are you can find one at the next bird feeder you come across. / / Finches Typical Voice, Size & Shape / House Finches are small-bodied finches with fairly large beaks and somewhat long, flat heads. The wings are short, making the tail seem long by comparison. Many finches have distinctly notched tails, but the House Finch has a relatively shallow notch in its tail. Color Pattern / Adult males are rosy red around the face and upper breast, with streaky brown back, belly and tail. In flight, the red rump is conspicuous. Adult females aren’t red; they are plain grayish-brown with thick, blurry streaks and an indistinctly marked face. Behavior / House Finches are gregarious birds that collect at feeders or perch high in nearby trees. When they’re not at feeders, they feed on the ground, on weed stalks, or in trees. They move fairly slowly and sit still as they shell seeds by crushing them with rapid bites. Flight is bouncy, like many finches. Habitat / House Finches frequent city parks, backyards, urban centers, farms, and forest edges across the continent. In the western U.S., you’ll also find House Finches in their native habitats of deserts, grassland, chaparral, and open woods.

This photo achieved a highly commended status in the 2007 ANZANG: Nature and Landscape Photographer of the Year Award. Ironically the key factors in this photograph were all negative ones, bad weather, poor light, a pitiful ski season, and a less than ideal time to go. As a teacher I only have the opportunity to go ski touring in the school holidays which is either side of the best part of the ski season. Usually this means that I have to travel to the Main Range in NSW which is a fair hike from my home in Melbourne to get to any snow. I had spent the previous day skiing out from Thredbo to the ice covered Lake Albina and as this season had not been overly good the cover was quite patchy. The day I took this shot I had planned to ski up Australia’s second and eighth highest summits, Mt Townsend and Alice Rawson Peak but the weather had produced white out conditions on the heights so by default I ended up skiing below the cloud cover in Lady Northcote’s Canyon. Not too far from my camp I saw these icicles high up a cliff on the Gorge wall. Being alone and so far from assistance should anything go wrong I was in two minds as to whether I should attempt to get to them or not. On three occasions in the most difficult spots I reassessed this decision but the closer I got the better they looked so imprudence won out the day and fortunately nothing went wrong. I don’t know whether it was my presence or the icicles time had come, but after getting two frames off the whole structure collapsed, fortunately the shots came out well. The other element of serendipity was the poor light, in better conditions the icicles would have been dazzlingly bright mitigating any chance of capturing detail in their delicate structure. I have been back to this same spot on two occasions since then to try and recapture this scene with a tripod and better gear but the trips occurred in better conditions resulting in the entire slope having a good cover of snow and therefore no icicles. The fleeting nature of these sorts of scenes is one of the things I love about photography; you can literally eternalise unrepeatable scenes, be it icicles, a sunset or patterns in the sand, what a gift. Sold two framed 12”x18” of this a little beauty. For other shots from this area check out my Kosciuszko gallery.
