The Canning River was first sighted by Captain James Stirling in March 1827 two years before the founding of the Swan River Colony. It later because the economic focus of the new settlement due to emerging logging industry and was supplying timber to the world including the great train tracks of India. The Aboriginal community whose ancestors fished and hunted there regard the river as sacred. Remains of former campsites date back many generations and stone chips found in the area are said to date back 5000 years. A remarkable heritage listed relic of the convict era, the ‘Convict’s Fence’ still exists in its waters. The fence extends over two thousand metres to form a silt barrier and was dug by hand using convict labor in 1866. It still prevents silt build up to this day. Emanating from the Darling plateau, the river today provides drinking water for the State from its five dams and is an important habitat for flora and fauna. Recreation use includes fishing, canoeing, water skiing, cruising and rowing. /

Sunrise on the Chicago skyline with Lake Michigan aglow. The 3 block rocks were covered with a coating of ice and along with the posts reminded me of Stonehenge. Worked in Layers by placing two widely different exposed images on top of each other and removing parts of one image to leave the deep colors of the sky and keep the highlighted icy block rocks. This done using Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Ashland Covered Bridge in Delaware
Featured in Historic Places 11/09 Featured in “Old Things” 11/09 In 1860 Ferdinand Wood was contracted by Cecil County to build a bridge over Lower Hills Fording. Its red roof and walls were added to protect the wooden frame from the elements. In 1927 the area around the bridge was purchased by William Dupont as part of his recreational farm and named Foxcatcher Farm. Upon his death the Department of Natural Resources took over the land. By then the bridge was showing the signs of age. In 1950 a truck broke through the floorboards and fell into the creek below. It wasn’t until 1992 that the Department of Natural Resources rebuilt it. While false work supported the original roof, the bridge underneath was completely redone with a steel frame. The old Kingpost splices and Burr Arch chord timber was preserved and used to maintain the bridge’s original appearance. It is registered with the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges. / This area was also the training center for 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. In 1994 it received the State’s Historic Civil Engineering Landmark Award. Taken with a Nikon D90 and a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED Lens No software added!
