In Central Australia there are two reserves one of which is better known than the other, Uluru. The one we found more interesting, but harder to walk around because it involved climbing was Kata Tjuto. There is no open walk all around the reserve, but on a minor walk we crossed a saddle and were surprised to find this plant growing on almost bare rock on the saddle. Taken with Pentax LX camera and 26-80 mm Sigma lens on Kodachrome film.

The Tomkinson River is a tributary of the Liverpool River, which drains a catchment area of over 8000 square kilometers in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. The Tomkinson River is tidal almost to its source, but nevertheless has an inflow of fresh water all year from springs in the Arnhem Land Escarpment. The wetlands along the river are prime habitat for a myriad of bird species, as well as the obligatory saltwater crocodiles, and anglers prize the river for barramundi fishing. Darwin is in bloom and the colour Red hot passionate and red….... Poinciana (Delonix regia) Considered to be one of the most beautiful of all the flowering trees, the poinciana comes from Madagascar. It grows into an umbrella shape, about three times as wide as it is tall. In summer the crown of the tree is covered in large, scarlet flowers made up of five petals. Four of the petals are orange to scarlet; the fifth is white or yellow with scarlet or crimson spots and streaks.

The Great Central Road takes you from Uluru in the Northern Territory across to Leonora and Kalgoorlie in the Western Australian Goldfields. It is the shortest route from Perth to Central Australia with a distance of around 1250 kilometers. / The route will take you through some spectacular desert countryside that has plenty of historical past, not least of which is the legend and mystique of Lasseter’s Reef. / In 1930 Lasseter set out with an expedition to find gold. He claimed that he did so, in the vicinity of Lake Christoper, unfortunately Lasseter perished on the return trip and the legendary reef was never charted and has never, to this day, been re found. / Later in the 50’s Len Beadell, of the Anne Beadell Highway fame, was responsible for surveying and constructing many new roads in the region. / But the history of the region started long before any of this, around the early 1870’s in fact, when Earnest Giles and William Gosse made multiple attempts to cross the desert from east to west. It was they who named Ayres Rock, now Uluru and The spectacular Olgas, now renamed Kata Tjuta. / It was on one of these trips in 1874 when on of Ernest Giles’ companions, Alf Gibson, died. Hence the Gibson Desert was named. / Outback Road was featured in Northern Territory Group.

The area is located near Wauchope, approximately 114km south of Tennant Creek, in the Northern Territory. The site is known as Karlu Karlu to the land’s Aboriginal traditional owners. The ‘Devil’s Marbles’ or ‘Karlu Karlu’ with its gigantic, rounded granite boulders, some spectacularly poised, is a remarkable landscape. Scattered clusters of these ‘marbles’ are spread across a wide, shallow valley. The Devil’s Marbles is a nationally and internationally recognised symbol of Australia’s outback.
