Yet another failed attempt at shooting a stormy dawn on the Sydney coastline. Bugger. Why can’t we get some of that deep grey cloud cover that say, poms get, or even some of that cyclonic stuff the banana benders get all the time, or even just a tad of the usual stormy Victorian weather. Geez, I dunno. Maybe I should stick to waterfalls. BEST VIEWED LARGER / Thanks for dropping in the favouritings, Comments and Views are greatly appreciated Narrabeen Lakes is a popular paddling spot on the Northern Beaches of / Sydney. The surrounding hills and trees make it quite sheltered. The fact that / it is right next to one of the world’s best surf beaches is an added bonus North Narrabeen lies on the northern shores of Narrabeen lagoon, bounded by Warriewood to the north, Elanora Heights to the west and extends east to the ocean at Turrimetta Beach. Narrabeen is opposite on the southern shore of the lagoon. The first land grants were made to John Lees, 40 acres, Philip Schaffer, 50 acres, and James Wheeler, 80 acres, along the south bank of Mullet Creek. Alex Macdonald was granted 80 acres at the beach in 1815 and west of this land JT Collins had 93.5 acres by 1857. During the nineteenth century travellers had to ford the lake until 1880 when the first bridge opened. A second bridge at the mouth of the lagoon in Ocean Street was built in 1925. With the extension of the tram to Narrabeen in 1913 providing easier transport, the whole area around the lake became popular for holidays and camping. A large camping ground became established on the north shore of the lagoon. In 1946 the Wakehurst Parkway was opened to North Narrabeen connecting the whole Pittwater area directly to Frenchs Forest and Seaforth. The origins of the name Narrabeen are uncertain, possibilities are: Narrabin, a native plant growing near the lake entrance; Narrabine, an Aborigine girl; narrow beans eaten by early explorers. James Meehan mentions Narrowbang lagoon in his survey in 1815. / This shot was taken as the sun sets over the lakes, I would like to thank the guy who was kayaking his kayak mde this shot , so it helps the make do with whats in your shot Equipment: Nikon D300,sigma 10-20mm, handheld Technique: HDR, 5 bracketted images,Photomatix 3,2 64bit See Also / Beyond The Sea:

I have presented a number of images shot at North Narrabeen Rockpool over the past year, and this one probably isn’t too special. But it’s different. This was the first time one of my kids came with me, my youngest on this occasion had a good swim. Being hot hot hot as it was, approaching sunset, we whizzed over for a cool dip. This was the first time I actually had a swim there myself. It was too hard to resist. Whilst in the water I figured the low angle and the light presented an opportunity. So my able assistant passed me the tripod, which I rammed into the sand, then my camera, the Canon 5D Mark II, with a Carl Zeiss Distagon 21mm f2.8 lens and a Singh-Ray Vari-ND Filter. This shot was taken with the camera about 4 inches above the water, which was chest deep. As I was about to engage the mirror lock-up, I felt something on my foot. Something moving and alive. I looked down and there it was – a big mother of an octopus with an unhealthy interest in me and my tripod. Foot extricated from its tentacles, the only thing left was the tripod leg, which said octopus proceeded to make out with. Though I uttered not a word, my sudden movement attracted a woman who had been watching me set up, and then a small crowd, including squealing kids and pointing adults. Well, I got the bloody shot didn’t I? Then resumed my swim. Gee it was nice. I figure the octopus had been unsettled by the vibration of me ramming the tripod into the sand, and came over to check out the intruder. God, he was big. Please note: there may be bullshit on RB, but NOT on this page! The above happened. I remember the day well. I got a parking ticket. It was a Friday afternoon at Long Reef on Sydney’s northern beaches. We had had a cool beer and a long lunch at the golf club, sitting outside checking the sky and the tide, before venturing out onto the headland. I had all my gear with me but chose to shoot the low tide with the infra red camera, a converted Canon EOS 10D. Framing the shot sorta wasn’t hard! Oh, yes, I almost forgot. It was my birthday too.
