Shot in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria, England. / St. Mary’s Church was built between 1093 and 1130. It has fine Norman archways and columns similar to those found at Durham Cathedral, with a diamond pattern on the stone. It is the mother church for what’s called the Rainbow Parish which includes another seven churches in the Lune Valley. The church today forms a wonderful focal point in one of Cumbria’s oldest towns

This sunset silhouette was photographed from the Town Green, looking toward the Lady Nelson Wharf on the south bank of the Hastings River in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia , at the start of a lovely autumn evening. Originally I was after the fishermen and a couple of pelicans cruising around waiting for some fish scraps. I made a shot of that, one of a float plane, (see “The Akuna Comes Home”) and also one of a couple of kayaks paddling past. Then along came the tinny with a couple of fishermen and with the light from the setting it was just begging to be shot. With a silhouette in mind I chose the 1/500sec Shutter Speed in Shutter priority to hopefully freeze any motion, knowing that with the focal distance I would be given the f.4.3 Aperture for hopefully a good exposure for such a scene. / Looks like it worked! Because of the glare from the water and the very bright area of sky where the sun was setting, the ISO was set to 100 and the White Balance to Sunny. / Spot Metering and Centre Focussing were preset, (as always) and from checking the Histogram after an earlier test shot, no Exposure Compensation was necessary. I pre-focussed on an area of bright water between the pylons, framed the shot, gently squeezed the trigger when the plane was between the pylons and ….. here it is! Wawatam Lighthouse at the entrance to the Marina in St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It stands at the end of an old railroad dock which was once used to load railroad cars onto a ferry to transport them between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. The city of St. Ignace has renamed he lighthouse after the 338-foot Chief Wawatam rail car ferry. It rises 52 feet in the air at the end of a newly constructed Huron Boardwalk and serves as a sentinel to the city’s marina. The beacon projects 13.2 miles over Lake Huron and will serve as a navigational aid to boaters. This lighthouse was acquired from the Monroe Michigan Welcome Center in 2004, was moved to St. Ignace in five sections, and went operational on August 20th, 2006.

This image of Lake Powell, Arizona, was taken from Alstrom Point. It was quite an adventure getting there along bumpy roads in SUV’s. It wasn’t until we had been there for a few hours, mesmerized by the view, that we realized we had 4 vehicles stuck in the sand!!! We pushed and pulled and filled holes with sticks and stones and eventually got out! I think it was worth it.
