CUSCO, PERU Cusco (also spelled Cuzco, and in the local Quechua language as Qusqu IPA: [ˈqos.qo]) is a city in southeastern Peru, near the Urubamba Valley (Sacred Valley) of the Andes mountain range. It is the capital of the Cusco Region as well as the Cusco Province. The city has a population of 348,935 which is triple the figure of 20 years ago. This horseback rider was concentrating so hard on the flag that I hit the trigger to capture his intensity. He was part of the Melbourne Cup parade on Monday. I shot a series of vertical frames showing his face clearly, but this – the only horizontal frame I shot – just captures the spirit of his task. There is a poignant touch to this image, because we were told that this small group of four or five riders were from the Victorian alpine town of Marysville. As any Aussie will tell you, Marysville was all but obliterated during the Black Saturday bushfires in February. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F5.6, 1/350, ISO 200, focal length 300mm. 120-1004

I met these children as they were playing on the streets of their tiny village in South Africa on the famous Garden Route, only a few hours from Cape Town. When I showed them my camera they were fighting about who would get their picture taken first. When I told them they could all be in the picture they eagerly posed for the camera and gave me one of their brightest smiles.
This woman tends the butter lamps at the Jokhang Temple, Lhasa, Tibet 2008. Peering through a small window I saw this woman surrounded by butter lamps. She stopped for only a split second and looked directly at me before continuing with her work – so no time to adjust the camera settings. The room is lit almost entirely by the light of the butter lamps. Taken with natural light – no fill-in flash. Canon EOS 5D, 70-200 f2.8 IS lens
Masai’s men dancing… They usually dance like that on their important events. The jumping is a kind of competition between the group’s men or the neighbour men, shows the power, strength. And also use it to win some wifes, i jumped, won 3, but my girl didn’t let me bring them with us… Masai Mara National Park, Kenya. Arequipa, Peru ! She is one of the many old people I have photographed in Arequipa coping the hard reality of poverty and solitude, but I remember her in particular… / She was always so sweet and polite making me always feel a sense of tenderness ! . .

This was taken in Montréal’s Chinatown. I wish I knew what they were selling since the line was rather long and it smelled delicious. (The long line grabbed my attention but mostly it was the enchanting smell of food!) I cautiously walked up to the counter (didn’t want the people standing in line to think I was cutting in front of them) to find out what they were making but got caught up with the intensity of how quickly these two lovely people were working so I photograph them. I was beginning to get frowns from the people on the line so I took one more quick shot, looked at the results on the camera’s LCD screen, was satisfied with what I saw and walked away. Later on that night as I was looking through the pictures I had taken that day, I noticed I cut off the B from the sign. (Hence the Ubble Tea title. Obviously it’s Bubble Tea – just in case you thought it was Rubble ;) – which is rather good. The Bubble not the Rubble.) I was a bit bummed out at first but then thought as long as I captured the two food vendors I was satisfied.
