Miles and miles of long rustling prairie grass and a big open sky. This is the kind of landscape that was ever before my eyes growing up in the wide open spaces of central South Dakota. There is so much beauty and simplicity in the basic elements of earth and sky that it never ceases to elicit a sense of peace in my heart each time I have the privleage to behold it.

Five miles north west of Hartford, South Dakota is a large slough and State game production land bisected by a country road. It is a great place for an outdoor adventurer with a camera. There was something about the trees, the water and the sun that called to me to try different exposures and lighting.

I don’t know how they could call it a highway. However it was a very interesting drive incorporatiing pigtail bridges and tunnels. I was told that some optimists had attempted to take a tourist buses through the tunnel – and got stuck – surprise, surprise..

This road which eventually enters Custer State Park has a number of interesting methods of gaining height – pigtail bridges and tunnels for instance. The scenery, with thick forest and large rocks makes for an interesting and scenic drive.
These bighorn were quite content to let us take photos and even get closer. I have another “head” shot of one of them in my collection on RB.
The undulation of the road gives some indication of the soil type in the Badlands. The park is well worth a visit because of the unique landscape. Badlands National Park, South Dakota is a National Park
