Grace at Nine

Photographic Art

Digital image, 3072 × 4096 pixels, uncropped
Olympus C70Z
Shot in RAW format. This file uploaded to redbubble at 600ppi
12.1mm
F3.5
1/30
ISO 125
Post-processing: Converted to Black and White in Adobe Photoshop CS3, ‘Orton’-style effect hand applied by layering original image with 2 duplicates – ‘soft, multiply’ and ‘sharp, screen’

My beautiful and much-loved daughter, who is just the most fantastic model :o) We (artist and model) created this image to send to the incredibly talented Randi Antonsen, who went on to paint a series of images of her. I accept that I may be somewhat biased (!), but to me Deva was an exceptionally graceful nine year old, the most wonderful mix of strength, innocence and wisdom. She glows with an inner light which I hope in some way I have helped to preserve and managed to capture a little of in this portrait… I wonder what she’ll do with ten? :o)

Digital Enhancement of Photograph by Jan Clark
Software: Corel PaintShop Pro X4, Photoshop Elements 10
1024×764 @ 300ppi

I used Corel PaintShop Pro X4 to start to brighten the photo using layers and masks for the desired effect. I then moved to PS Elements 10. I sharpened her eyes and added color to her lips using the smart brush. I used my Portrait Professional plug-in to soften her skin, soften her hair, and add brightness to her eyes to bring out the brown. Then I went back to Elements 10 to change the background which was a solid wall. I used folded black paper as the background and brushed in the other colors and the roses with several paint brushes and layers using multiple blending modes until I got the desired look.I added ambient light to her face, and also, painted her sweater to remove the noise that was present. I painted in some eye lashes, as well.

Heart in the Old Country, Hope in the New
by F.A. Moore

Traditional Art

Oil on panel
8 × 8 in.

I started with an oil sketch on the panel that, then built up the painting with oil glazes, most often using a
homemade glazing medium, including linseed and thinner and other medium. This provided a beautiful inner
glow to the work like the patina on fine wood. However, it was very slow to dry between layers.
My intent is to express the emotional condition, especially, of elderly immigrants.

This portrait of a lady is the story of immigration, the world over, told again and again, over thousands of years now.
The story has been lived by millions who have left their old country for a new destination and a new beginning.

The concept for the artwork centered around portraying torn emotions and hardships hidden behind her eyes, and of
using symbolism primarily through the use of color. Her pose creates a sort of subtle tension, with her back slightly
turned on the new city, even while she looks pensively toward it, offering up a flower of Hope.

The yellow side represents, of course, “the Old Country”, as immigrants typically refer to their homeland.
She lived and loved, and probably raised a family there. Her memories are a bright spot, which she brings
with her, in the flower, hoping to plant some of the Old Country magic in the New.

I feel for her deeply, and want her to be happy; but also know that it is her heart’s hold on the Old Country
that helps anchor her in a foreign world. She really cannot let go; and this is her dilemma. Her tentative hold on
the flower may be more than it seems.

SURVIVING THE URBAN JUNGLE
by Tammera

Digital Art

Photo Manipulation

With this image, Initially I had to choose between fear and excitement…
as those were the 2 emotions coming to me through the original image (see image below)…

I chose fear,…
Because I wanted to inject a bit of my own feelings…
from when I moved from a (Relatively) small town in Reno Nevada, to a big city (San Francisco) to go to college. As San Francisco is a large urban area, I wanted to interject that feeling and look into this piece. In doing so I had to conceptualize a background for this piece….I did this by adding a rusting old door in the background and reworked it in large chunks and areas reminiscent of urban look and feel…

I also wanted this to be reminiscent of my own experiences
So many things happened, as, urban life is much more fast paced….
But also, being young and naive as I was…I had some very scary things happen to me….And lots of lessons to learn about humanity!!
And the scarriest thing that happened, up until then, was having a great big June Bug (3 Inches Long) in my sleeping bag one night when I was outdoors!!

Sybolism/Meaning:
The Bug is to induce the feeling of fear….
The Skeletal Bug/Man is symbolic, in that I had to adjust my fears once in a large urban setting. Sometimes mankind can be scarrier than bugs!!
The Human Hands Reaching Out From the Background* are symbolic in that one must adjust to unfamiliar and sometimes bizzare situations, without becoming drawn into it’s paranoia.
